According to this article, it looks like they'll be on Penn. Ave. in 2012. Announcement on 2/25?
Cool. This has to be a logistical nightmare for the teams, but it'll be great for the fans here.
And I'm sure they'll be soliciting volunteers from all the local cycling/tri clubs.
Holy moly, that's great!!!!!
Wow, the real Giro. i wonder if the riders will be able to handle the elevation change downtown.
The AP is now saying that the party on 2/25 is just to promote the bid, not to make an announcement of a deal.
Yeah, it was more of a pep rally-type event. Let's hope they're successful. This would be an awesome event to have in town.
I write freelance for The Examiner, Spokes Magazine, etc. DC might actually get the Giro d'Italia!! Event is still in planning stage. Nothing approved yet. Please feel free to read my article on the Embassy of Italy's event. Grazie!
Seems like the DC Tri scribe beat another Examiner writer to the punch:
'Ciao, D.C.: Deal nearly done to secure world-class cycling race':
Mayor Fenty had a meeting with the race organizers earlier this winter and both sides seemed to hint at a "handshake deal," but as we know, those aren't real contracts.
I'll be celebrating once the deal has been finalized but until then, I kind of wish the groups would be careful about celebrating something that hasn't happened yet. Get everything worked out and sign the contracts. Then it's time to celebrate.
