People are receiving emails that the race has been cancelled and that refunds will be issued. No verification on the official website or Facebook page yet. Is this true?
I got the email that the race has been cancelled and that I'll get a refund and a discount to an alternate 70.3 race. Seemed pretty official, though no cause was given.
I got the e-mail, too. Seems like it's legit. I was really looking forward to that race, so I'm pretty bummed. No word about it on their website or FB page. Luckily, I still have Eagleman.
I had planned on WDC Tri and National Harbor as my two primary goal triathlons for the year. Now it looks like I'll only have one tri race for the year, Nation's Tri. But that was only a bike/run race last year. I hope the weather is better this time around.
I guess I can shift my training to add more emphasis on running. My other goal race is the Marine Corps Marathon (my first marathon). I've also been doing various shorter run races. Maybe I'll try to peak and taper for a 5K and go for a PR there. Hopefully the local 5Ks won't get canceled too. :(
Both DC Tri and National Harbor get cancelled--bet this wouldn't have happened if Fenty was still mayor.
Before this spirals out of control, we are seeking immediate explanation from WSEM so we can ensure the right information is being shared.
Will report back as soon as we get info.
President, DC Tri Club
Online registration is no longer available. It was still up about 10 minutes ago.
As for Fenty's influence, I have to agree. I think there might be some sort of political backlash going on, for whatever reason.
Just checked my email - what the heck! After losing two goal races at this point, I'm mentally preparing myself for Nations to be cancelled... Grrrr...
Wonder if it was canceled due to lack of entries. Lot of people I know passed on this race cause they didn't want to have to deal with the National Harbor.
Yeah, thanks WTC for the refund and $50 off a another race. How about a plane ticket to that race too? What a shame 2 out of 3 DC races canx...
Did anyone get their WSEM refund from the DC Tri cancellation? If so, could you tell me about the time it was mailed. I have verified that it was not redistributed back to my credit card.
I heard that they were processing refunds in alphabetical order, by last name.
I transferred my WDC Tri registration to Nation's Tri at the end of March.
I got my refund from DC Tri this week.
Yeah, I'm bummed as well. Was really looking forward to this race, and now I'm trying to figure out what other race I could do... that won't break the bank with travel costs.
Savageman in sept is a good alternative
Seems there's a curse on races at national harbor...
I think what surprises me the most about this race being cancelled is the total lack of damage control on the part of WSEM. In my over 25 years as a marketing and advertising professional, I've never seen PR so badly mishandled. They've had over 48 hours to formulate a response to all the angry athletes--and instead, they go completely silent. They even took down their IM 70.3 National Harbor FB page, further angering their customer base. A race cancellation may damage a race director's reputation, but ignoring the athletes who put trust in the organization and simply want a good explanation will ruin it. I'm afraid WSEM is going to lose a lot of future participants over this. Not only that, but sponsors will be hesitant to have their brand associated with any WSEM event in the future. The longer Chuck allows this to snowball out of control, the more impossible it will be for him to salvage his reputation. People are willing to forgive mistakes. What they won't forgive is being ignored or--in the case of having the IM 70.3 NH page pulled down--being silenced.
My june entry was shifted to the Sep race...isn't that the same management company? Wonder if it's too late for an outright refund...I'd rather go run the Partriot half or sprint. I agree the silence is very frustrating.
My experience is when you start seeing a company act this way it is a sign of serious internal problems likely associated with financial problems. I've already heard some people having issues getting their DC Tri refunds. Makes me wonder how hard or how long it will be before we get refunds for this one???
