The Portable Sanitation Association International (the porta potty industry trade association) is currently examining the standards that race directors use to determine how many porta potties their event requires. The decisions are currently based on number of participants and duration of the event, the same formula all large events use, which requires 7 porta potties per 1,000 people at a 10-hour long event. However, races differ from typical events in that everyone needs to use the facilities at the same time. The sheer volume of demand leading up to a race start may force race directors to increase the number of porta johns at their events.
Relief is on the way! The new porta potty standards for races are expected to be in place by next summer!
