Are you faster than a leopard? Can you tell a DCTrier by his spots?
What: Hill repeats from the National Zoo. And post-run burgers and beer at the Zoo Bar!
Where: Meet at the main entrance of the National Zoo on Connecticut Ave.
3001 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20008
Run from entrance through park to Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park, then up the very steep hill to Connecticut Ave., then up steep Connecticut Ave. back to entrance. Roughly a 3K.
Repeat as desired. However, be sure to be out of the Zoo by 8 P.M., when the gates closed. Otherwise, you’ll be sleeping with the lions. Or the jaguars, who are faster even than you.
Zoo Bar Location:
Just up Connecticut from the Zoo entrance
3000 Connecticut Avenue Northwest
Washington, DC 20008-2542
When: Run starts at 6:30 P.M.
Why: Revival of club tradition. And the Catholic U pool is closed for the year, and the Hains Pt. pool is closed on Wednesdays. And you’re anxious to tri something novel and fun after the excitement of the Nation’s Tri.
Also, some have expressed a desire to do hill runs, and we are here to serve you, with hill runs and with burgers and beer.
The track gang is coordinating our monthly hill workout with this one as well. So what that means is that I'll lead some dynamic stretching/plyometrics to start for anyone who wants to join in and some core workout if anyone wants after the hills. I think at least out of our gang, most people won't be doing much and are more going for the drinks as many just raced last weekend.
Hmm, sounds very interesting. I'm not running this week until Wed. anyway, to give my legs an extra day of rest after the Nation's Tri. I'll try to make it.
The cheetah are faster but not a threat to humans. The jaguars are not as fast but they are deadly. So I'll be sure to leave before 8 to avoid those critters. And the rats.
Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten about this. I should make it. What exactly is the route? Down the hill through the zoo, then you take Beach to 24th street and take that up to Connecticut?
Unfortunately, I can confirm that you do not get to sleep with the lions if you get locked in the Zoo at night, you'll just have a nice security escort out of the park. They generally lock the bottom gate first and leave the Connecticut gate open until they clear it.
I believe it's Beach down to near that big Connecticut Ave Bridge in Rock Creek Park, then up the path and that humongous hill to the Connecticut Ave and Calvert St. intersection, then up the Conn Ave sidewalk (east side) back to the Zoo gates.
Got stuck at worked and missed out, which is tough considering I only live a 3 minute run away from the zoo. Will this be a continuing weekly event?
Whether or not others will be there weekly I can't answer but at least the track regulars (28 people total from track and HIP etc. tonight in attendance. great group!) liked it and we will be back again in the near future for our once monthly hill workout. We did a little different route with basically warm up to the calvert hill then 20 minute circuit on the grass on the hill after some dynamic stretching. After my tri season ends in november I will personally be up for some weekly hill workouts if anyone else is!
On another note, to all the people who stayed for drinks at zoo bar... Our bartender/waiter (Will I think?) was absolutely THRILLED with his tip. I hung a little later and he kept raving about how awesome the runner group was and he was super appreciative. Everyone who left early drinks for free next time- you guys paid so much that those of us who were left at the end didn't even have to throw down and there was still a big tip! So we'll switch that up next time..!
Can't wait to collect. That was a nice little workout - except for the core sesh - sorta gross XP - but a fun way to unwind after Nation's. Good luck to all of you heading off for SavageMan! Put a Brick in the Wall for us!
