I'm searching for a sprint or olympic distance tri within a couple of hours of DC between Jul 18 and Aug 2. Has anyone here done the Culpeper, VA sprint?
The few others that I've found have been full/sold out... anybody got a recommendation?
I did Culpeper last year…swim was in a pond – 84 degrees, so no wetsuit. Bike course had some good hills, but beautiful ride. Run was an out and back and I seem to remember the first part at an incline. I believe this is the only Sprint I’ve done where the bike transition section was numbered…very well organized, and even though the race is in August, it was not that humid because you’re in the mountains. I’m signed up to do it again this year. There’s a Comfort Inn in town, and I’m staying there.
Hope that helps,
Since you've signed up again, I have to assume the pond swim (by far my weakest discipline) wasn't too bad. Looks like it's close enough to drive down the morning of, so maybe I'll give it a shot. Thanks again for the info!
I too did Culpeper last year and loved it - high recommendation. It seems almost like a mini-Columbia, but not quite as hilly. I think that I remember there being Lilly pads so the start of the swim had to be moved slightly.
As Paula mentioned, it probably won't be wetsuit legal, but I actually got a speed skin last year and Culpeper was the first race that I used it in. I have the Orca RS1 which was about $175, but I did see Xterra was selling them on their site for $150 https://www.xterrawetsuits.com/shop-xterra/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=36 last month if you use the promo code VEL. You can probably find them for as low as $100 now. It's a toss up is if really saves you time because you have to take it off after the swim (especially for a sprint). I've never liked swimming in a soaking tri top so it is nice in that you don't have to put it on after the swim.
There's also the 3Sports Triathlon 2009 in Richmond on Sunday, July 19, 2009 which looks like it's a pool swim, but never done that one.
I did the Pittsburgh Triathlon - Saturday July 25, 2009 (Sprint) - last year and really liked that though you're biking in the closed off HOV lane on the interstate. I did the Olympic, but I think the Sprint is essentially a shorter swim course, one bike lap instead of two and the out and back flat run is shortened. The link for that one is http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race45.aspx. It looks like we have a good continget signed up for the Olympic distance this year.
Paula and Brady, thank you both very much. This is my first year of doing tris so I'm sticking to nearby sprints and I think Culpeper fits my criteria and schedule.
Now I just need the wife to sign off and I'm golden. ;-)
What about the old Spud Triathlon race? 35 min from DC. 9/19
Also, check setupevents for the dates of Patriot's triathlon in Williamsburg.
Brierman is on 10/9. http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race53.aspx
Thanks for the suggestions, Lisa. I'll be switching back to mostly running after Aug 18 or so to gear up for the NYC Marathon at the beginning of November. After that, I'll be a former marathoner and swing back into tri mode. ;-)
And I think I'll look into off-road/Exterra tris as the cycling portion of on-road tris is mind numbing to me. Got any recommendations for off-road tris?
