I don't know how our buddies to the north always seem to get this kind of news first, but here's a HUGE notice that just went out on the Baltimore Area Tri Club's listserve today. This is so messed up. I'm glad I opted against getting an M-Dot tattoo...
Ironman Brand Purchased by Walmart, Inc.
Press Release Issued April 1st - Providence Equity Partners (PEP), owners of the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) and the Ironman brand, announced today the sale of the name and rights to Walmart, Inc of Bentonville Arkansas.
When asked about the sale, PEP President Chaz Poseur said "As an investment, Ironman has shown a tremendous benefit to the bottom line of PEP for the last five years. Even with the economic recession, we were able to fill all of our races to capacity and generated tremendous amounts of revenue from the clothing stream. Year over year revenue has consistently reached growth in the 40% range and now is the optimal time to divest our interest and recoup the investment for the benefit of the fund."
With its purchase, Walmart announced the creation of the Multi-Sport Division to be headed by Harlan Sanders, one time finisher of the Duersonnville Spring Fling Triathlon and an avid 5k runner. When asked about the future of the Ironman brand, Sanders said "Ironman is the preeminent athletic brand in the world and we plan to support this status in all of our stores and in every department. By leveraging the Ironman name, we will introduce Ironman branded items in our children's clothing area, malted beverages, as well as areas like auto parts and feminine hygiene products. We don't feel there is any area that the Ironman logo isn't appropriate."
In addition to the purchase, Walmart announced the following races to be held during 2012: Ironman Biloxi (July 2012), Ironman Oklahoma City (August 2012), Ironman Miami (September 2012) and the Bentonville Ironman 70.3 (August 2012 - Atlanta).
Perhaps note the date the press release was issued?
This is just awesome :)
Yeah, and other messages sent out by Ironman today (via my facebook page):
"THIS JUST IN- Ironman will be testing for a new drug as of April 1st, 2011! C. Sheen Drug. Click link for additional information."
Considering that McDonalds and CocaCola are official food partners for the US Olympic team, this Apr fools joke is a little too believable...
"...one time finisher of the Duersonnville Spring Fling Triathlon and an avid 5k runner"
Good enough for me!
The Washington Post, April 1, 2011--Mayor Vincent C. Gray today thanked everyone who congratulated him for winning his age group at last weekend's National Marathon.
The Mayor admitted, however, that he had appointed his nephew to run the race for him.
Harlan Sanders = Col. Sanders of KFC.
