Weekday Long Rides
POSTED: 4/18/10 9:55 PM

All - I travel to DC weekly for work so I'm not familiar with the area yet. I'm training for Louisville IM and will need to start getting in 2+ hour rides on the weekdays. I saw the Conte's Tues night rides and weekday morning rides at HP posted on the website but was wondering if anyone could recommend areas for a longer ride on weekdays (group ride or just routes).

Thanks!
Bruce

These are all great rides, but I'm not sure I'd recommend them during the week if you're riding alone during rush hour due to traffic ...

Depending on how much time you have, from downtown DC to Mt Vernon and back is about 40 miles, almost all of it on the trail -- great in the AM. Few other cyclists and runners out. Probably less fun in the evenings...

Thanks Tuan! Those are worth quite a bit to me! I'm planning on staying a few weekends rather than traveling I'm sure I'll do most of these routes. Do you think it would be okay to do some of these rides in the morning on the week day and avoid traffic?

You mean taking the DC to Mt Vernon trail in AM? I might have to give that a shot. If I start at 5:30, I could be done around 8:30 as long as speak to my boss the night before.

Thanks Gents!

Non-rush hour during the week should be ok. I rode McArthur-River Rd to Poolesville last Friday during the late morning/early afternoon (11-3), and didn't encounter any heavy traffic until I was back in DC around 3-ish. It may have even been lighter than on weekend mornings. Most traffic was of the contractor truck and school bus variety, not suburbanite-SUV variety.

Bruce ... I've never done these during the weekdays but a few club members have so I'll let them shine in. However, I've heard that traffic isn't that bad during rush hours. If you wait until 9-10 AM to start, you should be ok. You will be going counter-traffic since most people are driving toward DC while you are going away from it.

The routes are pretty hilly once you are about 15 miles from GTown but they are good for IMLou. The routes are the normal standard routes that most people in the area go on when they are distance training. Once you leave town, the roads are like country roads ... very scenic and quiet.

Good Luck.

Thanks again Tuan! Hills are good for IM Lou. Get me in shape hopefully.
