I hope IM MD survives....
I definitely applaud the timing of this announcement. It's nice to know what the club goal races are before other registrations open and close. I kind of wish the 2015 choice was one I was more interested in doing. It's nice that Maryland is close, but it's not really close enough to stay at home and the accommodation situation out there can be a little rough. And more importantly, the Eagleman course is boring enough as a 70.3. How about Chattanooga for 2015 and MD for 2016? That way, if the race folds after this year, we won't be out of luck signing up for other races.
Sigh, I had told a bunch of people that one of the only ways I would do a full IM in 2015 is if the club made IMMD the goal race for the IM Training Program. So I guess I am doing a full IM in 2015 . . .
Officially, Chattanooga is the club's 2014 goal race. We have a sizable number of folks doing Chattanooga this year, including a handful of folks not listed in the "race" section of this forum. We also have someone bringing the club tent down to Chattanooga this year.
The more important question is, how come there is no club international goal race ;) ... I've got about 10 people expressing interests in Ironman Barcelona. It's fast and registration fee is cheaper than its North American counterpart. Parlez-vous Francais anyone? :)
Yeah, I know it's not ideal, but the 2014 signup didn't work out too well and we have essentially the same number already signed up for MD this year. Seems like either way is unfortunate for some group of people. Maybe something more exotic is the answer after all. I've heard Catalans really appreciate it when you speak French to them. ;)
@ Holli, I just hope I survive MD.
@ Mark, you mean I have sign up for IM-MD 2015! Guess there won't be any retirement from me.
@ Tuan, how are we going to get the club tent to an international race? I'm not volunteering for that job.
@ Tom, both races are close in race date so basically the training programs would coincide with each other.
There is also no guarantee that Chattanooga will survive its inaugural year either. The fate of both of these races remains to be seen.
And with the posting of the IM-MD course now, I saw that the bike course is done in the reverse direction as Eagleman. Maybe that means since Eagleman always seems to have a headwind no matter which way you're going, that IM-MD will always have a tailwind no matter your direction. That might draw a lot more people. :) And even better, you don't have to suffer Egypt Rd in the race.
Also, the signup for IM-Chat this year was a bit of an anomaly as it seems to only be inaugural years that WTC is giving out spots to local area clubs. So while apparently about 1000 spots went to local clubs for IM-Chat last September and caused the 3 minute sellout, those 1000 spots will not be given to the clubs next year and available for general entry.
Wanted to bump this post but also add that Tuan, you or anyone else that would like to lead the charge on members coming out in force for a race, we, the board and our resources, will support you!
This club is volunteer lead and is more open to you, our members, than any other tri club that I know of which IMHO makes us the best tri club around!
Just let me/us know and we can make it happen. Woot!
I'm not leading the charge, but I know at least 3 of us who have already registered to make IMMD 2015 our first full IM :)
I think I''m leading a pretty strong DCTri crew of 300 to PeasantMan next year. Is that a club goal race? ... it should be ;)
I have either a good contingent of DCTri folks coming to IM Barcelona next year or a bunch of liars ... time will tell. I have 4 fully committed and possibly 10+, if folks follow through. Feel free to add me to the list of folks in charge of the international goal IM race.
European historian, Ed Moser, says that he'll be there to be our tour guide in Spain. We will see if he's a liar or not :)
Good stuff. We will need some club race leaders to step up for IMMD 2015. It's never too early to raise your hand to volunteer even ~365 days out.
Tuan, I can put you down for IM Barcelona lead, nice.
IM-MD 2015, I signed up the day after the race. No way I am going to miss this party. This year was awesome and the Facebook group was amazing!
Adam, the race is 53 weeks away as it's on Oct. 3rd. I don't know about race leader, but I'll be the tent guy for Eagleman again. I love the venue, but not the race.
