I'd like to be able to bike from my house to the Capital Crescent Trail. Is there an easy way to switch from the Mt. Vernon to the CCT without entering too much traffic?
As you take the Mt. Vernon Trail north past Roosevelt Island, you'll continue on up a pedestrian bridge that takes you over the GW Parkway. Stay on the path towards the Custis Trail and hang a right once you get to the Key Bridge.
Turn right and cross the bridge in Georgetown, take a right onto M St. Take a right on Wisconsin, go down the hill and take another right onto K St. (you'll be under the Whitehurst Freeway). K St. will dead end at the CCT.
I hope that helps.
From Mt. Vernon trail - go over Key Bridge - and pick up Cap Crescent in Gtown.
Thanks -- that will do it. I'm going to try it this Saturday.
You could also go across the Arlington bridge. You'll be on the right side, then you take a right after the bridge, go under the bridge, over the cobbles at the bottom of the stairs (behind the Lincoln memorial), then take a right again. This puts you on Rock Creek Trail (it sounds more confusing than it is...just look at the map). You can then get off that trail onto K street along the Georgetown waterfront, which leads you right to the capital crescent.
