FYI, Avg. high is 79, avg. low is 57.
It's 600 miles to Chattanooga from DC.
(vs. 500 miles to L.Placid, 600 miles to Louisville)
Tentative bike course (from the RD)
Tentative run course:
Transition will be the parking lot between Ross's Landing Park and the baseball stadium. Expo will be on the field to the east.
I think we're also leaning toward making this the club featured IM for 2014. Just saying....
Looks like a fast course - downstream point-to-point swim, less than 2K of overall elevation gain on the bike (a la Louisville), and less elevation on the run than the Marine Corps Marathon.
I usually don't like doing races in their first year, but this one looks good for a variety of reasons :-)
I love inaugural races. I also love east Tennessee. I'm not a huge fan of late September racedates though.
Ironman-Chattanooga! This could be the race that delays my retirement 2.0.
Hugh - don't you also have Boulder to do as well?
September is great if you are looking to KQ. You get a whole year in between! Anyhow, while this is exciting news, I promised myself to not dole out that much money to the WTC until I have a chance at KQ. Will plan on volunteering though!
This is a no brainer for me. So in!
For race + vacay, within e z striking distance of Great Smokies (most visited natl park), Ashville, Biltmore estate, Chickamauga & Lookout Mt battlefields, Nashville, Atlanta.
Also, Hammer has announced a new brand of gels for the event--the Chattanougat Chew Chews...
Cat - It filled up before I did Placid. I'm not that dumb to sign up for anither without finishing the one I'm training for (unless it is Kona).
I've been looking for a first IM next year and this one looks pretty good for that. Wish I could find historical data on the river temp for late Sept. "Mid 70's" predicted, but I'd like to see the data that WTC based that on so I could make my own determination. I need my wet suit security blanket!
This date couldn't be any better! It is just 2 years after my release from the Shock Trauma unit in Norfolk. I feel like it's a sign... I was IM shopping, thinking about Fla or LP debating which was better timing, then came this. Couldn't be more excited to train for my first full IM!
This is my hometown and I can tell you all that this should be a lovely event. That's a nice time of year for the area and Nooga has a lot of really neat things going on. It looks like the transition area is going to be Ross's Landing, which is walking distance to the TN Aquarium, an IMAX theater, and a bunch of good restaurants, all good news for spectators and family. The bike course looks like it's going out to GA and back via the Chickamauga Battlefield, which should be fun rollers (and fall foliage to look at). The run course will be a little hilly as it goes up to UTC but flatter along the river front. Crossing the bridges will be pretty, and the North Shore is a quirky artsy district.
I'm really, really tempted to make this my first IM. Being able to stay with my parents is a huge bonus!
Notables from Slowtwitch article...
"Swim splits in that event are typically quite fast since it is a down river swim and that should be true for this newest Ironman swim course."
"Although Chattanooga is nestled between Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain and Missionary Ridge the bike and run sections should be reasonably flat and fast. "
Registration opens on Sept 4. Who's actually planning to sign up for it? I'm strongly considering ending my boycott of North American IMs for this one. It's a down river swim. I'd be a fool not to sign up :)
So far, Ryan and Mike are the only two that are all in. Who else? I need to know all of the candidates that are going to be pulling me for 112 miles ;)
I am 100% in and have the sign up written into my schedule! Can't wait!
I'm very likely in!
Hotel reservations are open (I can't find any info about minimums or prepayment, but didn't have to prepay when I reserved):
Ihan, where'd you book? I went in at the Hampton Inn but also am on the reservation waiting list for Residence Inn (which has kitchenettes) but wasn't included in the group bookings through the IM website. Didn't see any word yet on ST or FB about what the host hotel would be.
I'm in the Springhill, a few blocks away from the finishing chute, but away from the craziness of the downtown hotels.
