I unfortunately missed yesterday's swim clinic and I am a NTP'r who needs some OWS time. Other then Sandy Point, are there any other local places to swim? Also, do any of the local public pools have 50 meter lanes set-up?
Yep. Waveone does open water swims at National Harbor every thursday evening. Check this thread for more info:
Takoma Park and Rockville have 50-meter pools too. And there are periodic OWS on the Potomac at Mason Neck put on by Curl-Burke. The WaveOne National Harbor swims are fun, and they often gear events to upcoming tri races.
Wilson Pool by the Tenleytown metro is set up for 50 m sometimes (check the website) and the pool at Hains Point is now open for the summer. Both are free for DC residents.
As for open water, if you're every by Luray, VA, check out Lake Arrowhead. It's the site for the Lake Arrowhead tri and a great lake to practice OWS because of a lack of motorized boats. Just tell the lifeguard you're a triathlete and they'll let you swim outside the designated area for free.
The George Mason Aquatic Center in Fairfax occasionally sets their pool up in the 50m configuration. I'm not sure what their 50m schedule is tho... the last time I swam there was 2 years ago.
Also, WaveOne has several open water races this summer:
7/8 - Washington's Crossing (1.3mi)
7/29 - HarborFest Tri Swims (750m, 1.2mi, and 2.4mi)
9/16 - 3rd Annual Swim for the Potomac (1K, 5K, and 10K)
Does anyone know when registration opens for these WaveOne races? It appears only the clinics and workshops are open for registration...
It sort of appears from this thread that you can swim in the Potomac except in DC, as long as you are able to enter the water from private property legally (i.e. no trespassing involved).
And of course, there is Lake Anna.
Thanks for the info!
