Clothing - what do you really need??
POSTED: 3/20/09 3:03 PM

It's clear that there is still some confusion as to what you need (specifically in terms of clothing) to train for and complete your first triathlon. We will be having a gear clinic followed by group run on Sunday, March 28th where we will cover everything else. Stay tuned to the NTP 2009 website for details. In the meantime, to address the apparel questions (especially so that those who want DC Tri gear can get their orders in before the Sugoi order closes), here's a quick recap:

Tri shorts - these are what you will race in. You will wear these in the swim, bike, and run. They have a smaller chamois (that's the padding) than bike shorts. This is so you don't feel like you're riding/running in a wet diaper. You will not be wearing any underwear beneath them (unless you want to chafe like crazy!).

Tri top - this is a tank top style top with handy pockets that will be made of a material that will dry quickly. You will also wear this in the swim (some people may put it on before the bike, but it's not very easy to pull dry clothing onto wet skin).

For the ladies: Sports bra - if the tri top that you get does not have a built in bra (the Sugoi tri tops do not), you will need a sports bra. There are tri-specific bra tops, but you can use any sports bra as long as it does not have any cotton-like component that would hold water. You want it to be a swimsuit-like material.

Bike shorts - you will want a pair for our longer training rides. Trust me, your butt will thank me.

As for fit, you want your tri top and shorts to fit snugly, but not uncomfortably so. Remember, you will be swimming in this, so you do not want any loose fabric to create drag. For more details on Sugoi sizing, please see the Sugoi Fit Guide.

The Hincapie (that's the bike gear) shop is now closed. The Sugoi (tri gear) shop is still open through this weekend. I will bring the Sugoi fit kit to the group run at Hains Point (8AM) this Sunday. This will be your last chance to try on Sugoi gear and place your orders for DC Tri triathlon tops and shorts this season!!

We can also bring examples of the actual DC Tri gear that we've used to the run this Sunday. At an upcoming gear clinic, we'll show more examples of the bike shorts, jerseys and accessories that will come in handy. You will have a spandex drawer in your dresser in no time!

I noticed on the website that the DC Tri specific gear with the logo is unavailable now. Will we have a chance to purchase in the future?

The Sugoi Rush tank (that's the tri top), tri short, and Fizz sports bra are all still available in the Gear Shop. The Sugoi gear shop will close at midnight on Sunday, March 22.
