Anyone know if the E. Potomac Park Pool in DC will open before Memorial Day this year? As I recall, an early opening date was considered last year, but did not occur due to work being done at the pool.
Indeed, last year the pool at Hains Point didn't open until a week or two before the DC Triathlon, and then it was only open weekends.
My guess is the earliest would be Memorial Day....
It's a good idea to contact DC's Parks and Rec Dept with your concerns, such as a request to open the Hains pool early before Mem Day and keep it open late past Labor Day. In the past, such grassroots replies have kept the pool open for extra weeks. The Dept's contact form (takes 40 seconds):
What's the deal with the Hains Pt. pool? Some folks were saying that over the weekend it was very murky. That the problem might have to do with 'inflow from Rock Creek'. Huh? (Tho the murk might make for realistic open-water training...)
Yes, East Potomac Pool this weekend was a good place for open water training. The pool it was so cloudy the bottom could not be seen even at the shallow end. One could not see beyond one's finger tips when swimming. Had to keep your head above the water avoid collisions. It is my understanding it is an unsafe condition for swimming if the bottom of a pool could not be observed and the pool closed until this problem was cleared up. Despite this situation the pool was opened all weekend and it lacked a distinct smell of chlorine.
Spoke with a worker at the pool. Said it will not be open during week days until Monday, June 20. Argh. That otherwise children would be tempted to skip school for pool....
You can share your views of this matter with the Parks Dept. It's been known to change the pool schedule before based on public blowback:
it was very cloudy on Monday, i thought they just dumped in a bunch of chlorine since it was the start of the season. Hopefully it'll clear up before this weekend.
The pool is now open on weekdays as well as weekends. (Gorgeous swimming weather.)
