Looking to get some good hill training in this weekend. Anyone up for going to Skyline Drive Friday or Sunday?
Also anyone have a recommendations for routes?
Park at http://www.spelunkerscustard.com/ in Front Royal. Make a right out of the parking lot, left at the T, and then another left onto Skyline.
Expect to work your ass off climbing hills on the way out and then hang on for dear life coming back. If a bear chases you, pray that it's on your way back. If it's on the way out, pray that it's a vegetarian bear.
It may be closed due to inclement weather, be sure to check before heading out there. The visitor centers are also closed, so you won't be able to get any food, not sure about water. It is a good ride, though!
I'm up for going to Skyline with you if you want. I haven't done Skyline for 4 months now so I'm going to SUCK at it, but I'm in if you want.
Do you have a car? I don't, but would be happy to go with you.
Could be interested if you go Friday....!
I'm up for Friday or Sunday.
piyushdabomb, what is your preference?
Right now I'm leaning towards Sunday to make sure the roads are dry after the rain on Thursday, but if you are both in for Friday then I am too.
I have a station wagon and a rack so I can carry 3 people and bikes if need be.
Send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can coordinate further.
I might be interested in Sunday.
Check that--I'm out; riding locally.
gthoyt - I'm in for Sunday.
Like many of us, I can't do Friday because of work and with Q4 underway and deals to close, it's a little tough to take off days from work :)
If you're on for Sunday, I'll join and let's make this happen.
Can we get a confirmation by Thursday on this so that I know whether I should ride hard on Saturday?
PS - I'll send you an email shortly.
Looks like the weather is gonna be good. Well as good as one can expect this time of year, Sunny and a high of 50 on Sunday.
Are we talking about doing 110 miles (55 up and 55 back)? Might be up for it if so.
Wow, I am surprised there are so many people wanting to kick their own butt at the same time it is freezing off!
Here are some more details of my plan.
Heading out from U-Street about 7 (I'm flexible through).
Riding from Spelunkers to Elkwallow and then back. About 50 miles and 5000 ft of elevation gain. Elkwallow is closed for the season. I'm going to call and make sure there is still water available. I plan on carrying all my own food.
If you want to do more miles I will be at enjoying my second cheeseburger at Spelunkers when you get back.
Any other questions? Anyone else want to go?
I'm not doing more than a 50 mile round trip if that's still okay with you guys.
I'm just getting back in season mode with these hilly rides and don't want to suffer too much, "yet".
Ideally, my preference is 9am on Sunday (to get sun).
Can we compromise with 8am?
I'm concerned about the sun going down at the end or the day. Leaving at 8 I figure we clip in about 10.
Hi John -
That's totally fine if we leave at 8. As long as we're riding by the time the sun is up...
I have your email. Feel free to chat with me then. We'll make this fun.
