VA Bike Sat 28 March
POSTED: 3/24/09 5:01 PM

Hello,
Will be biking from W&L High School Sat morning at 9 AM. Exploring the route from Arlington over to DC and MacArthur Blvd. Anyone is welcome to join. This particular ride is not that fast - 14-18 mph. I think we'll go around 2 to 2.5 hours. Z1-2 and 20 minutes in Z3 but we'll get that on the hills. Supposed to brick - 15 minute run after - we'll see.

Highs are 55 Sat and 50% chance of rain - yikes.

Parking for the bike ride is at Washington and Lee High School, in the parking decks - entrance on North 15th St. - corner of Quincy and 15th. Look here:

I'm in. I could do a little joggy-jog at the end if we only go about 2 hours - I have a bridal shower I have to go to at noon & thought they'd appreciate it if a)I didn't show up in spandex and b) showered first :)

I'll be there at 9.

Mimi :)

I am IN for a brick in the potentially sloppy weather.

I need a little convincing. Someone please tell me to HTFU! And if there is promise of food afterwards, that always helps. ::=^)::

I believe there'a a growing tradition of eating afterwards at Mexicali Blues, the Clarendon Diner, or some other spot in that restaurant-rich neighborhood.

Reasons for Sandy to bike on Saturday:

1. If the weather is nasty there will be fewer bikers to share the road with, unlike last weekend's spring fever circus.
2. This is why you bought a pink rain jacket.
3. When have we not eaten after a ride? Or a run? Or waking up?
4. Timberman is in 150 days.

HTFU lady.

I'll be there unless it really heavy rain. If it's really heavy rain, I'll be in the basement with my latest Netflix.

First, I'll be making a weather call (at least for myself). Andy's Conte's class is on and if it's really crappy I'm going to that and you can do whatever you like as the song goes. Will post here Sat at 7 AM.

Second, Ed said the route is basically to cross the Key Bridge and go up Wisconsin, just like the club ride. That doesn't sound too smart at the time we will be hitting DC. So we could head down the W&OD into VA, which will be safer since few people will be out.

If want to avoid GT traffic, can make left after Key Bridge to proceed to MacArthur, and to tri something different than another W&OD ride.

That sounds good - we can brave death by Canal Street for a short stretch. Looks like Andy's is cancelled. Unless it's a monsoon, we're going.

The place to meet us then from DC would be at the end of the Key Bridge. Somewhere between 9:15 and 10:00. Sorry - haven't worked out all the timing yet for this route. Will have cell phone.

Looks like a full Seneca loop would be around 52 miles, so we could do some subset of that.

Ok, so I'm still on the fence depending on the weather. I've never ridden in crappy weather before. Any advice on how to dress for this Saturday's ride?

We won't be going very fast because it's a hilly ride, and will slow the downhills - I like living. But if you don't feel safe, don't go. No worries.
Seek to be cold at rest and hot when we are really moving, climbing. Have 2-3 layers (I count my fat). I'll have a headsweats layer under helmet (30% of heat lost thru head - insulate there), 2 glove layers (thin ones and regular bike gloves) and wool socks, or maybe Gortex gloves and/or socks. A neat trick is to keep foot/hand warmers handy. But if it's really in the 50's, with that setup I'll be sweltering and stripping a lot.

For clarificaiton, this is not a HIP ride or NTP ride, it's a ride that a member of the club happened to post under Training / Bike, that happens to start in VA, You don't have to be HIP, NTP, from VA, or anything, to ride with me.

4 miles from the start to the end of the Key Bridge, so if you want to meet there we will pass you sooner rather than later - probably around 0915.
Any other thoughts welcome. Good luck with your decisions. See you at the 7 AM monsoon-check post.

I'm 50/50...rain + having to rush back & still be late for a shower...might end up either going solo early afternoon so I'm not rushed vs trainer workout & rent Twilight (don't judge!)
