So now that the only triathlon left on my race schedule for 2012 is SavageMan, I suppose it's time to incorporate some hills into my training. And I thought since Labor Day is approaching, I would do a hill intense weekend of training.
Saturday: Skyline Drive out and back
Meet location: Spelunker's back parking lot at 116 South Street, Front Royal, VA
Meet time: 8:15AM with the idea of clipping in at 8:30AM
Ride details: This is an out and back ride up Skyline Drive and then back down (no cue sheet needed - if you get lost, you have some serious issues). The distance you go is entirely up to you. My plan is a ride from the Front Royal entrance to Thornton Gap (the intersection with 211) for a total ride of about 65 miles. There is a fee to get onto Skyline Drive but if there are enough annual passes, then everyone could be covered. Otherwise, it's like a couple bucks to get in.
Post ride options: No running afterward. Food at Spleunkers.
Sunday: Mt. Weather loop (clockwise [reverse] direction).
Meet location: Park & Ride on Frost Street in Marshall, VA
Meet time: 8:45AM with the idea of clipping in at 9:00AM
Ride details: It is a 56 mile ride with some very challenging uphill sections when we hit the Mt. Weather road. Please bring your own cue sheet available here. There will not be anyone sweeping the course, but that doesn't mean I'm going to leave anyone in the dust to flounder in the wilderness. It is a scenic but definitely challenging ride.
Post ride options: Short post-ride run and then food.
Monday: Maybe an easy recovery run? Relax. Find a pool. A bottomless mimosa brunch?
You're welcome to join me for one or any or all of these "SOOO much fun" training events. Post here if you want, or just show up. Clip-in times are up for debate, so if I'm outvoted for later (or earlier) times, then I'll update the details.
And if anyone wants to join me for some hill repeats on Black Rock Road during the week, you're welcome to torture yourself with me.
Fine, fine , fine.
There has been talk of doing a huge out and back on Skyline, including the pillars, the descent into Luray and climbing that Mass-whatever hill. Waiting for definitive mileage and elevation...
Okay, got some mileage and elevation. A paltry 130 miles, and a measly 15,000' of elevation. I am assuming we are going to have to limit registration for this ride because so many people are going to want to do it. First 10,000 people that sign up below are in, hurry!
Yep. Alright. Ok.
For some reason, 130 miles and 15k of elevation change just doesn't appeal to me. Not sure why. :)
Is biking the loop clockwise harder? That's gotta be a little tight going down that last hill.
lol why stop at only 15k feet of elevation? i thought you said this ride was a "hill lovers" ride.. don't you need at least 18k feet of elevation climbing to label it that?
damn good luck and have fun with that ride. you should be ready to ride the tour with that type of ride.
I'm in for Saturday's adventure, and as usual, I'll be begging for a ride.
This sounds like FUN! I'd also be in for Saturday... with Kris, hoping for a ride?
I'll be in for the Saturday ride and have room for two people and bikes, email me if you need a ride: firstname.lastname@example.org
8:00 a.m. clip-in seems too early for Skyline and 10:00 seems too late for Mt. Weather. I suggest 8:30 on Saturday and 9:00 on Sunday.
I'm game for 9:00AM both days! 8:00 does seem early to get out there. :) But we can take votes? Time preferences anyone?
Doesn't really matter to me on times for me. Definitely in for Saturday, maybe Sunday. In need of a ride though.
Considering Saturday's forecast for 90-degree heat, I vote for an 8 a.m. clip-in time.
(I won't be at the Mt. Weather ride Sunday.)
I vote for early
I'm planning on riding Sunday and might bring some others. I vote 9am or later :)
Can't make Sat, but in for Sunday. Clip-in time at 9 am works for me at Marshall.
All right, let's go for 8:30 in Front Royal for Saturday and 9:00 in Marshall for Sunday. Will update the details above.
