Cherry Blossom Entry Goes to Lottery for 2010
POSTED: 11/30/09 2:30 PM

Well, I guess it was bound to happen!

From: Phil Stewart, Event Director

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and 5K Run-Walk will be using a lottery system to select our 2010 race entries. The Organizing Committee made this decision after the 2009 race filled up in just 2 hours and 45 minutes. We feel that a lottery system will be much more fair and will eliminate the server “freeze-ups” due to peak registration loads that reached 11 people per second last year.

Here is how the lottery system will work. Prospective entrants will be able to register for the lottery during a 10-day period starting at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, December 1 and extending through 11:59 P.M. on Friday, December 11 on the event website, www.cherryblossom.org. When registering, prospective entrants will complete and submit the entire entry form including the credit card information. However, credit cards will not be charged unless the applicant is selected. The entry fees are $35 (plus a $3.20 online entry fee) for the 10 Mile Run and $25 (plus a $2.70 online entry fee) for the 5K Run-Walk.

The lottery will be able to handle “Groups” of up to 10 people. This is designed to allow families and other groups to get in as a group or not get in at all. Each “Group” has exactly the same chance of getting in as each single individual. The first person in a group will set up the group and give it a name. When subsequent members go to register, they will be able to affiliate with that group.

The organizers strongly encourage prospective entrants to spread out their lottery registration over the 10-day period rather than everyone trying to register the moment the registration opens. Registrants at the end of the 10-day window have an equal chance of getting in as registrants on the first day.

I read about this in Steve Nearman's article in the Times yesterday. Another alternative race is the Cherry Pit 10-miler hosted by the Annapolis Striders on the same morning. Way less crowded, but a hilly option.

Always preferred the GW Parkway Ten miler later in April - just signed up for that one. Registration on line or stop by Pacers for a registration form.

If anyone has a volunteer entry code from last year (or deferral?) they'd like to transfer, please let me know: edgarnett at gmail dot com

Thanks,

Ed
