I've had an awesome year of triathlons in DC - and thanks to many of you for helping me move from the super sprint to the half in 2010!
Now I'm San Francisco-bound and looking for advice...
Do any of you know of good clubs (triathlon, running, cycling), great places to swim, or races you've enjoyed in the Bay area?
Thanks for any ideas you have!
Escape from Alcatraz!! This race is beyon awesome.
Registration for the lottery opens soon.
I was traveling to San Francisco for business frequently this year and swam a lot at the Y on the Embarcadero. They have a nice 25m pool and a pretty big tri team (they used to take up a bunch of lanes 2-3 times a week).
I loved training in San Francisco when I was there. Enjoy.
You'll also want to take advantage of Aquatic Park for open water swimming. It's great to have such a nearby resource.
Folks seem to really like VineMan.

Awesome! Thank you all for the recommendations! I can't wait to get started!
BallstonCyclist is right... The Escape From Alcatraz is one of the best races our sport has to offer! I did it last year, and it was a blast! But it's the most physically and mentally taxing race you'll ever do... the water is bone-chilling (54-degrees with a current), the bike has steep climbs and harrowing decents, and the 8-mile run (yes, 8-miles!) features a nasty climb called the "sand ladder"... basically a long stretch of stairs covered in sand that you take at about mile 5. Definitely a great experience if you win the registration lottery! And all the big names are there (Hunter Kemper, Andy Potts, etc)... best of all, everyone has to ride the same buses and boat to the start, so you'll probably see them!
The Bay To Breakers 12K run is supposed to be fun too... but a little crazy!
Sounds like an amazing experience, Luke! Thanks for the recommendation... and congratulations for completing such a tough race!
I was just out there a few weeks ago and two former DC Tri club members are actually on the board of the golden gate triathlon club.
