Has anyone done this race? This will be my second half..
If you haven't already checked it out, there is more info available on the Race section of our website HERE »
I did the race last year and really enjoyed it. The swim is in Lake Anna which is unseasonable warm in May thanks to the nuclear power plant that heats it. The bike is a rolling course and one thing to note is that the course isn't closed. The run is 3 loops through the park which I personally like because you get so see friends several times along the course. There should be a good DC Tri turnout at this event.
It's a really good local race with a grass roots feel. It's also nice doing a half-iron race for less than $200.
If you do a search there should be a few race reports for this race.
Basically, its a well run race. Swim can be a little choppy, bike is 2 loops on rolling terrain, and run is 3 loops with some painful hills you have to do each time. It can be hot on the run.
Its more fun than Eagleman, there I said it! ;)
That's sacrilegious Andy! How dare you! :)
Thanks, I signed up .... it can't be hotter than last year's eagleman.
With a little bit of Googling, I found this:
Discount code for any VTS race registration. Expires on 1/31/2011.
Thanks for the discount code Ryan!!
Have Roll Call threads jumped the shark now that we have a super nifty Race page? Anyway, I am IN.
Does the code work for the sprint too?
Ryan, Thanks for the code! I'm officially in!
Starting the season with a half... yahoo!
@ Galbert - I didn't try it on the sprint but I imagine it a general promotion that setup events is holding to push early registration across their events.
My goal is to not have Phil lap my @$$ this year. :-)
Ok so how much is the coupon code worth? I want to know how much money I lost since I signed up yesterday and just saw the code today! Rats!
Anyone know if/when Kinetic sold out last year? Had to cancel Columbia because of a wedding, so looking for another May race, but hoping I can see how training starts going before I commit.
I just paid so now it's official. See you all down there. It's hard to believe that tri training is going to begin in earnest in about 3 weeks.
Also, I just booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Thornburg, VA. It's $100/night. The Comfort Inn is next door for $70/night but the reviews were horrible. Both hotels are about 20 miles from the Park.
Lynn, the discount code was $20. Pretty good but if you load up on free goulash following the race you can earn your money back ;-)
Oh no! I'm in for Kinetic Half but I booked that hotel with the (really) horrible reviews. I just read them so I might change but the rate I pulled up at the Holiday Inn express was ~$120.
If you are speaking of the Quality Inn on Danbell...I know there are 2 or three hotels down there right near each other, Melissa Tallent and I stayed there last year and it was fine. It was clean and they even let us have late check out so we could go back and shower after the race. They didn't charge us for that either. With taxes it is $80 a night.
I am booked to stay there again this year.
I'm racing this half for the first time. I see a lot of people are also racing, which is awesome! We'll have a great showing.
The discussion of hotels intrigues me: for the race veterans, I wonder if it's completely out of the question to drive down on race day? Let me know!
Abby - it's definitely possible to drive down on race day morning. It's an early start, but totally doable.
Honestly, if you stay at a hotel you still have to get up pretty early. The race is twenty county road miles from the hotel and begins early.
However, personally I'll take a 4:45 wake up over 3:00 any day. If you don't need as much sleep as I do, driving down morning of is fine.
Last year there were some long lines at race registration so don't count on it being quick. I was sprinting from the bathroom as the gun sounded for my wave.
Travis, I don't know about that. Last year I was so tired the day prior that I decided to wake up at 3:15am and leave for the race. Not much problems 'cept as I got closer to Lake Anna.
Point being is that one has to weigh their options. Driving down on Friday afternoon on rt. 95 will guarantee you a nightmare. It depends on personal preference.
