I watched a live pre-race MCM show on the local Comcast SportsNet channel yesterday. (They continued broadcasting for the first 30 min. of the race.) They said that back in the fall of 2001, that MCM was the first major run race in the DC area after the 9/11 attack. The Army Ten-Miler was canceled that year.
I was wondering if all of the local 5Ks and 10Ks were canceled that fall. (The DC triathlons hadn't started up yet.) I didn't run back then so I have no idea what was going on with DC races in 2001. Just curious.
As far as I can tell, the MCM was the first MAJOR race after the Sept 11 attacks. According to RacePacket, a Tidal Basin 3K took place on Sept 19, the National Capital 5M & 20M happened later in Sept, and the Georgetown 10K happened in Oct... but none of these are nearly the size of the MCM.
Thanks for the link. Interestingly, the ATM was held the next year despite the ongoing Beltway/DC sniper attacks. That shooter wasn't arrested until four days after the race took place. The MCM followed the next week.
