As a season-pass holder for the Thursday night Wave One swims in the Potomac, I really don't think twice about the water quality. I swim, I don't get sick, neither do others, so I figure "no problem." But I'm not exactly sure how I should process this report about a man who contracted flesh-eating vibrio bacteria while swimming in the Potomac over the Fourth of July weekend.
Thanks for sharing the article. Since I'm moving to Alexandria in Sept... I'll have 2nd thoughts now swimming in the Potomac.
I think it is probably an inaccurate conclusion in the report. The bacteria was likely on the wood that caused the scratch rather than hanging out in the Potomac. I would be more worried about the microbe that crawls up a person's nose and eats his or her brain (this happens once or twice a year when water is warm and not moving fast) or a shark that makes a wrong turn and heads up to the river (hasn't happened for a while, but could happen any day).
