Front Royal rides ongoing?
POSTED: 11/01/11 10:50 PM

Anyone know if groups are still heading out from Front Royal on Saturdays (and Sundays)? And whether the leaves have all fallen down out there? Weather looks cool but sunny for this weekend.

I have no clue, but I am all in for a Skyline Ride on Sunday if anyone is heading out, I'm car-less for the time being.

A bunch of us will be heading out there Saturday. Likely departure from Arlington 8 am. Details to follow.

Details, per Adam Stolzberg:

""Leave about 8, meet up at the Panorama lower parking area at Thornton Gap. Make 1st left off 211 after going under Skyline Dr. Don't enter park and pay entrance fee.

There are bathrooms there but 2 weeks ago they were closed I think temporarily just for cleaning.
We'll bike from there, mm 31.5, south on Skyline till we hit Big Meadows wayside, mm 51. http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/big_meadows_map.pdf
Group up, refill water, bathroom break, etc.
I think most of us will turn around and back to the cars. This means it'll be about a 39 mile ride. If you're hardy, feel free to go out further before turning around.
Bike elev profile looks like this: http://bikewashington.org/routes/skyline/central.htm

After we get back, lock up the bikes, throw on your hiking boots, change, grab your lunch and head up Mary's rock which starts from this lot. As you can see on the first pdf, it's a '3.7 mile round trip to an outstanding view, difficult.' It's got some elevation but for this group, it's really not that hard.

Temp forecast looks like it'll be brisk so bring layers.

Feel free to pass this on as I'm sure I inadvertently left people off.

- Adam"
