Looking for a place to get in some solid training - any thoughts?
I'm kind of at a loss for either a road with a safe amount of traffic. I've done WOD/Custis/Mt. Vernon, but the number of slow-moving people traveling side-by-side makes this less safe/more frustrating than hitting the roads. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Try the Freshbikes ride route (or some portion thereof):
Lots of fun hills at no additional charge!
Their official rides start on 6 May.
Depending on where you live/how far you want to go, might be worth putting up with the frustration to cross the bridge and do laps at Hains Point?
I just accept a certain amount of frustration/traffic on the trails at rush hour. Haven't found a way around it.
Lesser known is the 4 Mile Run (Ride) Trail branching off from Custis Trail Arl down to the Potomac in Alexandria and back.
Thanks both! I've done the Freshbikes ride once, but wasn't sure how that was without the escort out of Arlington, but haven't tried Hains Point yet. Anyone else have a secret route they'd be willing to share?
Going from Key Br up Custis to the formal start of W&OD makes a 10-mi round-trip hill route.
Hains Point is fine, but very boring. There are tons of good roads for solid weekday rides in Arlington. Check out this post for a link to a variation on the Freshbikes ride that someone posted earlier. Lots of the roads have dedicated bike lanes, and this particular ride is great because it's super hilly and all right turns, so you don't have to stop that much.
And here is the dedicated ride link:
