Looks like someone thinks we like spending our time writing essays.

Hi all,

I have off this Friday and it looks like this Friday (New Years Eve) will be fairly decent weather. So i'm hoping to get a bike ride in that doesnt involve me sitting on the trainer watching TV (although i've gotten some good movie watching in).

My training plan has me down for a 45 mile bike this weekend. Is anyone interested in meeting up? in late morning/early afternoon? I'm new to the group and would love to meet some of you before heading down to San Juan in March.

I was thinking a Hain's Point to Mt Vernon Ride. Start with a loop and then end with a loop or two. That way, if people need/want to do more/less they can add/drop loops at the beginning/end (wow, that was a lot of /'s)

I've mapped out the ride (more or less): http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/26396164

As for time, I was thinking 10am. Would that work for all interested?

that might be an hour too early for me...I unfortunately don't have off but I think I can peel out at 10 and get over there at 11 or 12...can you wait that long?

I won't be able to go on Friday but keep posting workouts.
There are few spots remaining so people who are thinking about it can sign up. If anyone wants to go hardcore (not me), the day after the race a 10 k race will be taking place 20 minutes from SJ or if you are more tough a 1/2 marathon will be held an hour and 20 minutes drive from SJ in one of the interior towns.

As promised, I did the SJ 70.3 run loop 2x while down in PR, and here are a few observations. It will be quite scenic to take your mind of the pain as you pass the beach, historic forts, and great views of Old San Juan, but it's going to suck around 11am with humidity and heat. Let's hope there's cloud cover. The run is a rarely flat, you are either going slightly uphill or downhill. There are 3 steep sections of about 200 mts in length and I guestimate them at around 6-8% grade. Remember, this is 2 loops, so it makes for a "fun" 6 short steep sections. The first one is at about mile 1.5, 2nd about 3.4, 3rd about 4 mile of the 1st loop. Also, total elevation is about 300 ft, so about 600ft for the 2 loops.

If anybody has done the 4 mile run trail between Shirlington and Falls Church this would be a good comparison of about 10 miles. Maybe we could organize a nice 10 mile run sometime in Feb.

The bike course is flat like a pancake. Even the bridge overpasses are not "steep".

The swim is mostly protected with probably the last 200-300 mts against the current.

Transition will be between 1/4 to 1/3 mile depending on which entrance to the track stadium they decide to use. If you've done Nation's is roughly the same distance.

What else....SJ has a lot of offer in terms of nightlife. Let me know if you have any ?'s regarding the course, Puerto Rico or SJ in general.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much Jorlie! Which trail between Shirlington and Falls Church is it? I'm in for a group run in Feb. Also I'm thinking about doing the Cloud Snapple half marathon on the 29th.

Julia---"Four Mile Run" trail connects with the Mt. Vernon trail just south of Reagan Airport and goes west towards the Falls Church area. Right at the Shirlinton Village, it starts paralleling the W&OD trail. You can see the trail if you park at the north side of Shirlington. The route that I'm talking about starts at Shirlington Village and parallels the W&OD trail from its start. If you go out roughly 4-5 miles (approching I-66 and the Custis Trail) and turn around, this should provide a good indicator. I just happen to live 1 mile from Shirlington, and this is one of my favs running routes.

Relay???

Hi! I just heard about this tri last night at the holiday party. Would anyone be interested in doing a relay? I would swim. I am sticking with olympic and sprints this year. Not at 70.3 miles yet, but would be down for doing it as a team.....

Karly :)

Hey Karly,

Great idea on the relay option. You might want to consider trying a new post to find others interested in the relay. I only say this because i think most of the people on this thread are already signed up. A relay thread might get the attention of someone who isn't reading this one. Good luck.

myself and a group of friends are staying until Tuesday. We were considering staying in Rincon Sunday and Monday nights, but havent decided yet. From what i've heard sounds like it might be a nice place to relax.

Cool, I'll be in Rincon Sunday through the end of the week. I'm there to surf mainly, so I'm staying at the Casa Verde Guest House because it's cheapish and close to some of the good sptos. But as for relaxation, reviews say the place is pretty loud til 2 or 3am every night because of the bar that's right next to the rooms. So if you guys want restful nights, probably not your place. But if you and your friends are cool with that, I've got a 3-person room to myself, so it'd great if I could split it.
