The Virginia Bicycling Federation is working with Amtrak, Richmond 2015, the Adventure Cycling Association and other groups to explore whether it's feasible for Amtrak to offer bike roll-on service in Virginia. The issue is a complicated one. Considerations include possible reduction in the number of passenger seats, luggage car equipment, platform compatibility between Virginia and Northeastern destinations, and so on.
If the plan is adopted, passengers could board an Amtrak train with their bikes and secure them in a to-be-determined manner on the train. Some trains have padded hooks to hang bikes. Others have bike racks on the floor. This could be useful for D.C. area cyclists who want to head down to Richmond or Williamsburg, but don't want to deal with the stress of driving down there from D.C. (Williamsburg is a great place to ride.)
