Nice to see more OWS in our lake-deprived region:

"CUBU Masters 2011 Open Water Training Schedule

CUBU Masters is pleased to announce the start of our 2011 Open Water Training Season. From early June through the end of October, we will be offering anywhere from one to three workouts per month in nearby Pohick Bay. These events are practices, not races, around a carefully measured 500 meter coarse set in the protected, clean waters of Pohick Bay. Swimmer safety is paramount, with an average of one support vessel per every ten swimmers in the water. Additionally, an escort swimmer can be provided upon request.

Please come out and join us on any or all of the scheduled swims to improve your confidence before your next triathlon or open water race, or simply to get in a great workout. Selected swims will also be followed by an optional run and a great BBQ. Pre-registration for all practices is highly encouraged, using the attached form. Note that no payment is required up front to register; payment is made on the morning of the swim...that way, if we need to cancel due to weather there are no problems with refunds!

We are looking forward to a great Open Water training season this summer!

BTW, the Sat, June 18 swim has been cancelled. Due to yesterday's torrential rains (which left me cowering under a Potomac River bridge).

Event Report:

About 80 folks showed for the two hour-long swims at Gunston Cove, VA, near the George Mason estate on the Potomac, about 10 miles south of George's friend George W's Mt. Vernon estate.

600-yard loops around three buoys. Swimming upriver was quite choppy, good training for rough-water races. Water temp was 82 degrees and definitely wetsuit optional. Water quality seemed ok despite recent rain. Boats and kayaks from Curl Burke masters supported the swims.

Had to walk about 150 yards out to get to the swim, through a very low tide clotted with reeds. Not saying the sea of reeds was thick, but at one point an infant Moses was spotted floating by in a cradle, and later an army of Israelites pursued by chariots marched through the tendril-choked shallows...

Delightful if challenging swim once out on the river. Had to synchronize your stroke to the waves and the currents.

Afterwards, a 3-to-8 mile run through the forested trails and roads of scenic Mason Neck. Then a bbq and brews hosted by Team Z.

Definitely a fun multi-sport event.

Just wanted to follow-up with an endorsement of this awesome OWS. I had a great time!

The organizers did a fantastic job to ensure a safe environment and everyone was very welcoming. And the run routes were shaded and well-mapped. Just a great opportunity to get out there and practice.

I hope to see more DC Tri-ers out their the next time.

Two swims, and other fun stuff, upcoming:

"GUNSTON COVE OPEN WATER TRAINING:

August 14
August 28 (Charity Swim)
Sept 4 (Followed by a run and big BBQ).
Sept 18
Oct 2 (start time is 1030 am & the swim will be proceeded by a run and followed by a big BBQ)
October 16 (wetsuits may be recommended)

The cost of all but one of these remaining swims is only $10, due to the great participation we have had at three of our previous swims which took care of much of our start-up costs and the weedcutting!

The Swim on August 28 is a charity event and costs a bit more, but it is well worthwhile... please read the details below.

For the August 14th swim, which is being coordinated by Coach Dominic Latella, please note that it will start at 8 am (safety brief and course orientation will be at 7:30 am). You can pre-register for this swim at AUGUST 14th OWS. Pre-registration, though not necessary, is highly encouraged as it will expedite the sign in process. Please contact Coach Dominic Latella with any questions or for any additional information at dominiclatella@mac.com

The swim on August 28 is the 2011 Chanelle’s Swim Challenge. After being hit and run over by a car in August 2009, paralyzing Chanelle from the chest down and resulting in a spinal cord injury (SCI), the grim news from the doctors that she would never walk again was equally as painful as the physical pain. In December 2010 Chanelle was able to began swimming for an hour per week. Now, eight months later, she is getting ready to partake in this 5K open water swim! The purpose of this event is to raise money to purchase the rehabilitation equipment necessary for Chanelle's continued road to recovery and quest to walk again. This is a fun event and the course will be designed so swimmers can do shorter distances if they are not up to the full 5K.

If you are interested in coming out and contributing to Chanelle's cause, please visit http://www.chanellescause.com/?page_id=167 to access the registration form and event details. If you would like to make an additional donation, you can also do so via her website-http://www.chanellescause.com/?page_id=7. While there, please browse around her site to read more about her story and equipment she is fundraising for, view photos and videos of her progress, and follow her blog. This will be a great, fun event!

The September 4 and October 2 swims will include the Z-ers and thus, we will follow or lead the OW swim practice with optional runs of varying distances plus, of course, the great Team Z BBQ!

Please be looking for additional details to come out via email on the September and October swims, and again, contact Coach Dominic if you have any questions on any of these planned training events."

Mark: Thanks, I've been trying to nail down info on this swim. Last I heard, the swim is supposed to be on, but they're still putting the details together. When and if I learn this, including registration info, I'll post it. - Ed

More info, from the organizer:

"Yes, we are confirmed for this Sunday morning. We are starting the swim at 1030 to coincide with high tide, and it will then be followed by a big BBQ. No need to preregister, but all interested swimmers should be there by 10 a to register. Swim will run from 1030 - 1200 and BBQ from noon to 3 pm. Come one and come all - please share with your team, conditions should be great!"

I think the assembly point is again at Gunston Cove: From Alexandria, take Rte 1 So., 242 So., turns into VA 600 So., left on Mt. Vernon Blvd., take to River Rd.

Confirmation, unless there's inclement weather, from the organizers:

"The planned Open Water Training Session at Gunston Manor is on for this coming Sunday, September 4. To coincide with high tide and optimal water conditions, the swim will be from 1030 am to noon instead of the usual 8 - 10 am. No preregistration is required, but swimmers should be at Gunston Manor no later than 10 am to register. A mandatory safety/course orientation briefing will be held at 1015 am. Also, all swimmers must be USMS or USAT current.

The weeds were cut two weeks ago and course conditions should be great, including 79 - 80 degree water temps.

If there is any threatening weather on Sunday morning, check the www.cubu-masters.org website by 830 am Sunday morning for potential cancellation...no updates on the home page means the swim is on.

The swim will followed by big a BBQ from noon - 3 pm. Everything will be provided for the BBQ. Cost of the swim is $10 and the BBQ is $5.

Course: The course will consist of three buoys in a triangle. One complete circuit around the three buoys will be 500 meters. The first buoy, which will be the start of the course, will be about 150 meters from shore. Swimmers can either swim to the start of the course (preferred), they can walk provided they are wearing foot protection, or they can ride on the boat. For anyone wearing foot protection that prefers to walk to the start of the course, they can put their foot protection on the boat while they swim.

What to bring:
· Pool or wading shoes, if preferred
. Goggles (clear for overcast, tinted for sunny)
· Water/Hydration
· Registration Information (USMS/USAT member card and $15 cash)
· Towels

Please carpool if possible. The gravel parking area immediately adjacent to the marina and the road leading down to the marina are all available for parking. Once these areas have filled up, parking will be in the grass field adjacent to the entrance to the marina (small gravel road off Gunston Rd Way). Alternate parking can be found at the Community Center down the street. The marina is located at the end of the small gravel road on the left of Gunston Rd Way and is a very short walk from parking.

Maybe 70 on hand, including the lengthy trail run beforehand. Water was weedy, but refreshing, with a full 90 minutes of swimming a 450-meter course. Big bbq after.
