How do I find the water temp for the dc tri next weekend? Thanks.
Hi Joel,
The official water temperature will be announced next weekend. In the meantime, you can check the USGS site for temps.
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/dc/nwis/uv?cb_00060=on&cb_00065=on&cb_00010=on&format=gif_default&period=7&site_no=01646500
Just scroll about 1/3 of the way down the page & select temperature in the parameters & it will give you the last 7 days of temps in Celcius. Hope this helps!

Looks like the river temperature absolutely skyrocketed this week with the hot weather. It right around 77 earlier this week, and is over 85 now.
Under 78 is wetsuit legal, and 78-84 is optional but for no points, and over 84 is no wetsuits at all. Last year for this race, it was in that 78-84 range, and anyone that wore a wetsuit had to go in the last wave instead of with their age group. Seems like we'll be in that range next weekend, at best.
The air temperature last year was like a mid-90s high. Going later on the swim meant you were running later in the day in hotter weather, which probably more than erased any time savings you gained by wearing a wetsuit on the swim. Keep that in mind when you choose your wave if it's wetsuit optional.
I'll be planning on swimming without the wetsuit.
87 seems awfully high. Reading today from NOAA is 81.9

You can actually sign up for the "WaterAlert" on the USGS site if you really want to geek out.
Just click subscribe under the temp graph and you can set the parameters you're interested in and how often to receive the info.
I was out in the Potomac on Saturday. It is very warm. You guys are lucky not to have to wear wetsuits. Sometimes the water is cold.
Brad.
