Congrats to all the racers. Sounds like the heat made the run especially challenging. Sound off if you wish on your experiences!

I echo those congratulations to all EM racers yesterday. Great job in that heat. And big thanks to Malissa Z. and Holli F. for coming out to support us.

It was hot day! Just happy to survive and lower my PR by 2 minutes. Morning started out right with the announcement of a wetsuit-legal swim! This probably saved me 5-10 minutes. Even though I had a decent bike split, I never felt comfortable in the aero position and road the bulk of the last 20 miles on the bull horns. Truth be told, just haven't ridden my race bike as much as I should have heading into my A race. Then had hoped to run faster, but I ran what I needed to go sub 5. Overall considering my training and the heat, I am pleased with my result. It was great seeing all the DC Tri racers yesterday!

So hot yesterday. It was my first 70.3 and I'm happy with my result, swam and biked pretty well, my run didn't go so great though, body just shut down in the face of the sun after 5k or so. 4:31, good for 7th in AG, a little bummed I missed out on AG podium. Looking forward to my next half.

But geez, it was rough out there. Definitely not 13.1 weather, let alone 70.3 weather!

It was great seeing a lot of DC Tri Club racers out there

Thanks for setting up the tent Hugh!
Hot weather brought out Bonkzilla on the run course for me. Don't remember much of the last 4 miles of the run, but I did get escorted down the finisher's chute by an EMT. No more hot weather races for this guy.

First time for lots of things!

First time getting muscle cramps due to salt issues, even though I took like 7 pills.

First time getting a penalty! Got a yellow card for overtaking. Was trying to avoid drafting a peloton that was blatantly cheating. They all got red cards. Ha.

First time running a sup-2 half marathon. My splits were funny: 16/93 in my AG on the bike with a 2:41... then misery on the run for a 2:21 run split. Oof. See "muscle cramps," above. Had to go aid station to aid station for potato chips and Gatorade.

Thanks to the love from all my DC Tri peeps on the course.

Yes, I might do that race again. Smarter next time.

Swim was great with wetsuits and smooth water. Bike had light wind....but the run, ugh! It was the first time I've gotten cramps. In retrospect I should have taken some salt tablets.

Saw Abby getting yellow carded and thought it was so unfair...At that very moment the bike course was feeling like a road race, I actually thought that those ladies were on a rotating paceline on purpose, and Abbie wasn't having it.
My first half....no cramps, I think thanks to gallons of pedialite that I drank the day before, and on race morning.
I also went from aid station to aid station for ice and liquids. I drank so much that I had a hard time breathing.
I finished 19th in my division and i was ecstatic that i ran a strong last mile.
I guess next year I will push a little harder on the bike.
I loved the race, the organization and the location...i just wish they did it in October!

I think that was probably the most challenging race I have ever done and I have done 2 fulls. The heats just broke me down. The ride was so boring and the run was painful! I came in 26 minutes after I wanted to and had my worst 1/2 marathon time ever.

All in all, glad I did it, but won't be signing up for that race again.

It was nice to see all the DC Tri folks out there. Your cheers got me through the day.

Eagleman was my first half iron so I wasn't really sure what to expect. My swim/bike were awesome and I was on pace for a pretty good time. Came out of T2 behind Ellen Wexler then proceded to slog up and down in place for the next 13.1 miles. Happy to finish in 5:23 and 16th in my stacked W(25-29) for my first half iron!

Giovanni, you're right. I wasn't having it. That freight train of women from the swim wave behind me were shamelessly pacelining. I got forced into their draft, and as tempting as it was to hop on (I love a good pace line!), I instead attempted to overtake the whole pack. I got yellow carded for failing to pass the entire group in 18 seconds. Boo. Turns put they all got red cards for drafting though! And they deserved it! When I went to the penalty tent for my check in, they all came in about a minute after me to serve their 4 minutes. If I had dropped back (4 lengths for WTC!) I wouldn't have been penalized at all, but what fun is that? I had to try to get back in front.

Great work to all on this tough, tough race!

I actually am considering it again. Smarter though.

Abby was carded at the last club Happy Hour too. And check this out, from the minutes of the last Board meeeting: "A. Sanford suggested putting on a new clinic: 'Enhancing Your Performance: Wearing fins during the swim, motorizing your bike leg, and cutting the run course'. The clinic will be part of a seminar, Energetic Performance Optimization (EPO)....

My take on the race; had my mid-life crisis ambitiones all lined up - I wanted to go sub 4:30 and felt well prepared. Swim was great and came out the water at 30 min flat. Jumped on the bike and had fun battling some of the other M40-44 comrades. Finished in 2:20 and felt pretty good even in the rising heat. All was looking good at that point for my ambition time. Plan was to initally go easy and then try to run a negative split. Picked up speed half way on the run and then it happened....!!! My old friend Mr. achilles tendonities was back with a vengeance and had taken a severe bite at my heel. Humped on for about a mile, walked a bit and then got a lift back to Cambridge for a first ever DNC race.
So now after three days on powerdrug Naproxen anti-inflamatoric painkillers I am looking forward to full recovery and restart rehabilitation training. Or maybe I am just to old.....!

AG by the way was won in crazy 4:06....
