Fall Half Marathon - suggestions?
We will soon update the Featured Races page for 2012. In the meantime, keep posting here so we know what you are planning!
I just can't wait until Tuan starts racing so I have something interesting to read. This off season is really killing me.
Vietnamese Century? Is this for royalty only?
My present plan,
March Triathlon 70.3 San Juan
June Triathlon 70.3 Eagleman
June Total 200
July Exterra EX2 Rocky Gap State Park
Sept. Triathlon 70.3 AG World Championship (if qualified)
The revolution begins next week. I'm bound by threats of deportation to not reveal anything until then. Let it be known that the virgins have been lined up, the goats have been purchased, and we are just waiting for next Wednesday. The start of the revolution will be spectacular.
For the sake of full disclosure, when I say virgins, I mean folks from outside of the Clarendon/Ballston/Court House area. We all know that the only time that we see virgins in that area is during Halloween ... bunch of freaken sinners!
So that I don't get accused of hijacking this thread, here are my 2012 races
June: Vietnamese Century
July: Ironman Vietnam
August: Challenge Copenhagen (Iron distance tri in the state of Denmark)
November: Philly Marathon
To address the question of fall half marathons in the DC area, here is the schedule I know about. Please let me know if there are any good ones I'm unaware of!
Sun, Sept 2 - Rock 'N Roll Virginia Beach
Very hot, but also flat & fast... plus I hear it has great music & a great post-race party
Sun, Sept 16 - Rock 'N Roll Philadelphia
The first of 2 fall halfs in Philly - also the one I haven't done.
Sun, Oct 7 - Wilson Bridge Half Marathon
A point-to-point course along the GW Parkway, starts at Mount Vernon and ends in National Harbor (I know lots of people are scared of National Harbor races, but these guys did racing in National Harbor right the first time!) Obviously a scenic course along the river... and great crowd support in National Harbor at the end.
Sat, Oct 13 - CareFirst Baltimore Half Marathon
A very challenging course through the hills of Baltimore (not a PR course). Amazing finish runs down Eutaw Street in Oriole Park before finishing on The Spine between Camden Yards and Ravens' M&T Bank Stadium. Also the best post-race celebration of any major race in the area... almost like a tailgate!
Sat, Nov 10 - McDonald's Half Marathon in Richmond
Richmond prides itself on being "the friendliest marathon"... great crowd support from families in the middle miles, and pizza, chocolate chip cookies, and cold beer afterwards. Plus, nothing says fitness like The Golden Arches!
Sun, Nov 18 - Philadelphia Half Marathon
The 2nd of the Philly fall half marathons... it has an exciting finish outside of The Art Museum that Rocky made famous. Plus Philly has great crowd support and the Christmas decorations up the weekend before Thanksgiving, so the stretch downtown at mile 5 is electrifying!
Hope this helps!
In response to the half marathon list, I have different and smaller races with much less fan fare (and less crowds).
Sept. 8th Bottle & Cork 10 miler in Dewey Beach. The only problem with this race is that there is a 5k along with it. So when those runners are done, they are at the bar before the ten milers.
Sept. 23rd/30th Bachman Valley Half Marathon in Westminster, MD. About 200 people run this race. Low key and small entry fee. About 75 minutes from DC.
Oct. 7th Metric Marathon hosted by the Annapolis Striders. 16.3 miles of good training. This will be my first official true event as race director. This is in my neck of the woods where I coach x-c and track.
Oct. 14th Lower Potomac River 10-Miler. Beat the crowds and race in this flat and fast course on the scenic area of southern Maryland. A bbq follows the event.
Nov. 4th City of the Oaks Marathon. Okay, this is in Raliegh, NC, but there is a half marathon along with it. I raced in this in '09 and loved the low crowds of under 5k runners. Maybe we could get a group road trip for it. *Plus, I stayed in the Red Roof Inn with a noon check out.
Dec. 8th/15th Rehoboth Half/Marathon. Flat, fast, cold and windy. That is the temps at the beach in late autumn. Great race followed by post race food from Catcher's and fluids from Dogfish Brewery.
Any questions, please ask me.
Hugh - if I didn't know better - I'd call you a runner.
Shamrock 8K, Virginia Beach, March 17th
ITU San Diego, Olympic, May 12th
SheRox, Sprint, Philadelphia, August 5th
Beach2Battleship Half Ironman, October 20
I'll play and hope someone wants to help me motivate!
March 17 - Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon
May 6 - Pittsburgh Marathon
June 10 - Eagleman 1/2 IM
August 18 - Ironman Sweden
September 9 (maybe) Nation's Tri
October 6 - Seagull Century
November 3 - Ironman Florida
I might want to throw a couple shorter running races in there as well! I live in Petworth, so if anyone wants a training buddy, let me know.
Crystal City 1k Wine Walk
The Beer Mile
The Bourbon Chase
The Gin Run 5k
