Hi - Just signed up for Luray and am trying to figure out if I should drive down the day before or whether it's close enough to head down on raceday morning. Does anyone know how long roughly the drive is from Capitol Hill?
That's such a great race! I did it last year. NOTE: Lake Arrowhead is shallow and weedy, and in direct sun. Don't count on it being wetsuit legal! The hills on the bike and run aren't as bad as Columbia, but it sure isn't flat.
As far as the drive goes, it's.... not close. I'd say plan on at least an hour and a half, not including waiting in the line to park. I stayed in a cabin near the race site that weekend. If there are a few other people going out for that race, you might want to look at doing the same. You can get a pretty sweet cabin for about $200 (divide among all people, not that expensive).
I drove there from Silver Spring on race day a couple of years ago. It took me 90 minutes or so. There isn't that much traffic going there but there is traffic once you are near the race site.
The year that I did it, it was wetsuit legal but I'm sure that there are years that it wasn't. Also plan on walking a lttle bit from the parking lot to the check in area. Think sharing a small dirt road with cars as you are walking toward the checkin area.
I hoped that the race is on a Saturday. Kate, we can't have you doing races on Sundays ;)
No worries Tuan, the race is on Saturday and I shall not be derelict in my Royal escort duties -- assuming you haven't killed me by then! Last Sunday when I finally got home, I drank 2 liters of water, ate a mountain of pasta, took a nap ... and it still took me three days before I could walk like normal again. Explain to me why I'm torturing myself just because YOU signed up for an Ironman???
Kate ... when you die, you will go to heaven and there shall be 12 virgins waiting for you.
Anyone else who wants to pull me on the bike on Sundays ... there are still plenty of virgins left in heaven waiting for you. They won't know who you are unless you pull me on the bike.
You can have your 12 virgins. I'll take 8 pros.
I'm a bit late to this forum, but am looking for a cabin in that area - do you remember what company you went with/where you stayed? Thanks!
All-Star Lodging helped me find the cabin I rented. The specific place I stayed was actually really nice and conveniently located, but you CANNOT get there if you don't have 4WD (which, luckily, I do). They manage lots of other cabins, so they can probably help you find the right one.
