Shortie wetsuit for NJ State Tri?
POSTED: 7/17/09 11:54 AM

Need some advice here: if the water is a temp that allows wetsuits for the jersey state tri next weekend - are any of you going to wear one? I like swimming in a wetsuit so am thinking about getting a shorties from bonzai just in case the water is cold enough. Anyone doing similar?

Thanks,

Vanessa

I'm thinking I'll wear a wetsuit - already own one - if permissible since I have no illusion about ending up on the podium for hte Oly! Or the sprint for that matter.

Going to bring it and hope water's below 83/84/whatever the cutoff is

Here are the USAT rules regarding water temp:

78 degrees or lower: competitors may wear wetsuits

Above 78 but below 84 degrees: competitors may wear wetsuits but will not be eligible for awards

84 degrees or above: no wetsuits allowed

It's a judgment call for you, but keep in mind that on a sunny day air temperature also warms you up considerably. Historically, water temps in NJ have been in the low 80's.

I saw a few people last year wear a wetsuit. Do what you feel most comfortable with. However the water was very warm last year even without a wetsuit.
