As many of you know, Rob Vigorito is the founder of the Columbia Triathlon Association and race director for the Eagleman Ironman 70.3 race in Cambridge MD. He was in Hawaii for the Ironman World Championship last weekend. While out on a ride on the Queen K Highway, he tried to avoid a truck that stopped in front of him. He flew over his handlebars and crashed into the truck.
He suffered severe injuries in the crash, including multiple rib fractures, a fractured scapula, and a collapsed lung. His wife reported to the Baltimore Sun that he did not suffer a head or neck injury. She wrote that he would be in severe pain for about a month. While that's bad news, it does make it sound like he should be able to recover from the crash. So that would be some good news.
"Vigo" had also finished the Half Full Triathlon 10 days ago in Ellicott City MD before flying to Hawaii.
Get well soon.
Here's the brief Baltimore Sun article:
Gosh, that totally sucks. I hope he is ok and in severe pain for less than a month. That sounds like a really long time to be in severe pain.
After the tragic Virginia Tech shootings, I recall, Vigorito stepped in by making a huge dollar contribution to the school. Wasn't he also the organizer for the Spud Tri, one of the early triathlons in the area?
Is the tricolumbia email address a good way to send him well wishes?
"Robert Vigorito" <firstname.lastname@example.org>
Brad Yeager was the organizer of the Spud Tri, Son of Spud, etc.
Best wishes to Vigo and his fam. Sounds like he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but has the support of many in the area.
