Hi there! I'm heading to the beach this weekend (and many more this summer) and would like bike route recs for 15-20 mile rides. Thanks!
I'd be interested in this too. For the past few years, I've just been doing the ride from RB down route 1 to ocean city or maybe fenwick, depending on how much time I have. The pros are that it's got a dedicated bike lane on both sides and it's pretty much unbroken by lights. The cons include sometimes Eagleman-like winds, fast-moving traffic and boredom.
I found this route online: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Rehoboth-to-Lewes-on-Junction-Trail
I'm trying to edit it to where I would be starting but the map is not user friendly. Let me know if you discover any other routes. Thanks!
Yeah, the bike trail is fairly new and they run the Rehoboth Marathon on part of it. There are also some good backroads off of rte 24. I would just try to stay off of 404 and 113. When I used to guard down there I used to do the rte. 1 ride to Fenwick which came to about 38 miles roundtrip. Watch out as sometimes it can get pretty windy on coastal highway.
On Sunday there is a 5k at Cape Henlopen HS at 7:30am. If you go, you should bike there because traffic coming to the beach is pretty bad. Have a great weekend down there!
Just be forewarned that the Rehoboth-to-Lewis trail isn't paved, so is more the kind of thing you'd want to take a hybrid bike or mountain bike on. You could probably ride a road bike on it, but a tri bike might be tough.
Some route ideas for you are below, although most start from Bethany, so not entirely helpful to you.
First link is to the Tidewater & Junction between Rehoboth/Lewes. Easy parking and trail-head in the lot behind the outlets. It's a great trail, but it is gravel paved, and I'm not sure thin tires would do well on it. You can get to the same place taking 1 northwest to King's Highway into Lewes. Many nicely paved back-road miles around there. If you go to Piranha Sports's website and download the bike-course map for the Cape Henlopen Triathlon, that will give some ideas.
For getting south of Rehoboth to do any of the back roads or the routes linked below, I'd ride 24/John Williams Highway. I recommend not riding on 1 between Rehoboth and Bethany this year -- they're going nuts finishing the bridge, and upshot is that it's frequently down to 1 lane in each direction, with new lane shifts, alot of debris on the shoulder, and cement mixers going very fast in all directions. One passed me earlier this summer so close/fast that its slipstream sucked me into the lane of traffic, so I'm done with 1 this summer. (South of Bethany, to Fenwick and OC, it's fine.)

Thanks for the heads up re: junction trail not being paved. I may take my hybrid bike then this weekend to do that and see. But will also check out some of the other routes next time. Will report back re: junction trail.
