I have never been a fan of the terms “fast” or “slow”. It’s all relative! Besides, if you are reading this, you are doing something the majority of the population isn’t – therefore you are already “faster” than the majority.
That being said, someone asked me at the Brick-Nic about pace groups/speed for biking. From what I could find via my friend Google, there is a range for what would be considered a “B ride”. I think the best table I found was from our friends at Potomac Pedalers.
The chart was broken down to (H)illy, (M)oderate, (F)lat
Ride Class - H, M, F
CC - 10-12, 12-14, 14-16
B - 12-14, 14-16, 16-18
BB - 14-16, 16-18, 18-20
A - 16-18, 18-20, 20-22
AA - 18-20, 20-22, 22-24
So if you know you average around 16 mph at HP, you are probably close to a B rider.
With the Conte's group ride starting tonight (if it doesn't thunderstorm) and as we get more into the season, I thought this might help people describe their speeds better than "I'm slow, I go 18 mph to the T!" That might be slow compared to Chrissie Wellington, but maybe not to the person who just dusted off their mountain bike.
Happy training and please be safe!!
