Pace really depends on the group and how many hammerheads show up. Last weekend I think we avg'd just under 21mph for 75 miles. I would probably expect it to be a little slower this weekend (around 20mph?), and we also are sure to regroup at a few key spots along the way so we know everyone is OK...
At a minimum, sit in for as long as you can and enjoy the draft! I bet most will be able to hang on until their turn around at mile 28 or whenever.
..and what Joe said! PS. I'm in for the 112, buddy!
thanks for deats!
Please, if you want to participate in the Saturday ride but aren't as fast as the fast group, go ahead and post anyway. Let us know what your pace is going to be and how far you want to go.
In a perfect world we'll have 2 and maybe even 3 different groups out there riding together. It helps if we know ahead of time who's coming out. We might be able to help arrange a couple different speed groups out there.
It's nice riding out that way -- especially once you get out towards Seneca and Poolesville.
See you Saturday!
I'd like to ride Saturday and will be in the 17-18 mph group. Plan to ride 55 out to Seneca and back.
If you think you're my speed - please post!
Katie - I'm the 17-18 pace, that would be great
17-18mph sounds great to me
just have to make sure i can do saturday...
One thing to keep in mind regarding all this (as there were problems in the past), when people are posting about speeds there are varying interpretations as to what the meaning for the entire ride is....so for instance someone may be saying:
"Looking to ride about 20mph.." That doesn't necessarily mean they are averaging 20mph but potentially that is their top speed without dropping a crank arm or red lining but their overall AVERAGE for the entire ride may be more in the 14-17mph range.
On the same token -
"Looking to average 20mph..." means that potentially the group can go much much faster. The faster Saturday group usually AVERAGES 18-20mph for the ENTIRE 50-100 mile ride...however they routinely are pushing upwards of 25-28mph out on MacArthur and at points throughout.
I only say this so there aren't false expectations running around as the riders in some of the groups feel responsible and sometimes are responsible for other riders that are new to the group. That being said once the group drops down onto MacArthur from G-town after Sibley Hospital it goes to Defcon 5 extremely fast and people get separated really quick.
Andy is right that we do regroup at certain points, but waiting 5 minutes or so is okay, but waiting 10-15 gets to be a little much especially if someone is misgrouped and got dropped early on, which happens from time to time.
That being said, state your intentions CLEARLY as to your expected AVERAGES or TOP SPEEDS, so that you can get matched up with the correct pace group and have a more enjoyable ride since riding alone (especially after getting dropped like a piece of lead *speaking from experience*) just plain stinks....
Billy Goat Gruff
My intention is to hang on as long as I can, and then ride at my pace the rest of the way. Which by the way was an average of 17.6 last week, be we did have sections where we were pushing 21-22 where Chad said. Other than that, it is an AWESOME ride.
If there are folks who truly average 17-18...but max out ~21-22 on MacArthur, give a shout!
28 mph occurs for me with a bit more gravitational assistance....
Thanks - Laura.
I'm excited about this ride! I'll be in the 17/18mph group. What is the first meeting place? Exact location and time? Thanks!! Adriana
Details are in the very first page of this thread, except start time is 7am. Per Eric, this means: 7am start actually means: 8th/Penn clip in at 7:10, 1st/Indy roll thru at 7:12, georgetown roll thru at 7:30.
See you out there!
Thanks so much Andy. For some reason I can't go to the first page of this thread to see the exact address. But many thanks for the info. Cheers! Adriana
dear people that chad may have scared off,
adriana, i know we can ride together and laura, i'm sure you'll be fine with us (and anyone else interested). there is likely a big enough differential between us and the defcon team that we will not be regrouping with them. i've done this ride several times and can lead the group. and of course within the non-defcon group we can regroup if there are different speeds.
ps - let us know where you will be joining so we can look for you.
I am new to DC tri and have done this ride several times with members of the club but never with the group- I plan on joining the group in Georgetown but am totally fine getting left behind if you all smoke me! :) I would prefer that no one waits for me!
Hopefully no one is scared off by Chad. He was just saying there is a hammer jock group, but there is those of us that are a lot less speedy, and they make sure we all stay together. Last week was the first time I did the ride and although I was able to hold on most of the time, the group allowed me to rally with them through out the ride. And of course Katie made sure I rode the right way home. So come on out and let's ride together and have some fun.
Hi everyone, Thanks so much for the info and thanks Katie for the e-mail, very helpful!
I will definitely be there ( 8th and Penn, 7:00am) on Saturday morning! It sounds fun! Cheers, Adriana
I will be at Wisc/M at 7:30!
Looking forward to it, thanks!
I'm gonna be in the 17-18 mph group,
Sunday Ride -- same as the Sat weekly... leaving the Hill at 8, G-town 8:30. Steady ride - no blowing up.
