BECOME A MENTOR: Teens Run DC is looking for mentors for
the 2011-12 academic year. As a mentor, you will have an
opportunity to encourage and support young people in their
running and in their lives. As you run (or walk) with a student
for one hour at a stretch, you will become a steady and relied upon presence. Together you may dream and set big, but manageable goals, whether it's walking and running for 30 minutes once a week or racing in a marathon. Together, you will experience the sense of victory that comes from achieving those goals by taking small, but steady steps.
During this year, you will not be alone. You will be part of a team and a community. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in regular workshops, and you will have the support of experienced mentors and coaches who will guide you as you forge a relationship with one of our students.
You do not have to be an experienced runner to participate. Maybe you're just beginning a fitness program yourself. We take mentors at all levels of fitness and ability.
What you do need is heart -- to encourage and support our youth. With that in place, we can teach you the rest.
Time commitment: weekly runs or walk-runs on Saturday mornings throughout the academic year. Typically, we get together by the National Mall at 9:15 am for anywhere from sixty to ninety minutes.
