I'm still debating if I'm going to do this race. After looking at the USAT website, the event is already 68% full as of 5/1. That seems like a pretty high % considering the season is just beginning. For those considering doing it, you might want to sign up before is too late. I thought I pass this info along to help out those on the fence.
Debate no longer... and sign up ASAP! DC Tri Club sent about a dozen people last year. We all had a blast... it was a beautiful course, racing against the fastest athletes in the country. Several people from our club placed pretty well (Ben Winterroth won the M30-34 agegroup, and Stephanie Ewert was 5th in the W25-29). Plus, Burlington is a really cool town and we went to the Ben & Jerry's factory after the race!
The race fills up early (they re-opened registration last year... but I def wouldn't count on that happening again). Also, Sprint Nats is on Sunday 8/19 this year, and you don't need to qualify for that! If you're really determined, you can do both... I did the double in 2010, and plan to do the double again this year!
Thanks Luke! I'm IN. I lived in Burlington one summer & I do love that venue. This year may be we could also hit the Magic Hat brewery, also outside of Burlington.
I'm nowhere near as fast as some of the club power hitters. I'd figure that a lot of club members qualified at Nation's under the 33% rule, so is better to give them a heads up on the race filling up fast.
I'm not sure how many members do know about the Nation's rule, but maybe some type of outreach could yield more DC Tri souls than usual at AG Nats. I'll reach out to Alejandro, so may be the club could advertise on the website & in the weekly updates. Currently, the website's main page has all the info on the Mid-Atlantic Championship, which I totally understand. However, I could see them including something just below it with info on AG Nats highlighting the Nation's top 33% qualifying standard, etc. I think casting the net further could be beneficial in getting more folks to the swim start at AG Nats.
I'm signed-up to race on Saturday, and will likely be up there a few days before to visit friends. Keep me posted on the goings-on!
I'm in! I won't be anywhere near the top on this one, but I hear it's a great race, and I have relatives in Burlington. Looking forward to hanging out with club members there too!
Looks like we'll have a great turn-out again this year!
The race was 76% full as of May 15 so register ASAP if you are planning to go up to AG Nationals. And don't forget to indicate in the race section on the Club website that you are "attending".
Jorlie, because you asked for it, we'll make this a featured race and will take the Club tent up!
Qualification information here:
In!! I think we are going to need to rent a house. :-)
In!! I think we are going to need to rent a house. :-)
The race is 86% full as of yesterday. If you are on the fence, register ASAP!!
The olympic distance Age-Group Nationals race is now sold out. But there is a wait list available. And Sprint Nationals on Sunday is still open... I plan to do the double!
What are we thinking in terms of lodging in Burlington? We did a few hotel rooms last year... do we want to go for a house this year? I have a few friends from UNC that may want to go in with us too, if we have space!
INn for a house!
Luke - I heard the Vermonster is calling your name. You can make your race weekend a triple and add in a scrumptious 20,000 calorie heap of that wonderful ben & jerry's dairy delicacy. - RT
I'm down for the Vermonster if anyone wants to attempt it on Sunday afternoon! (not sure it's a good idea to do that on Saturday and then race Sprint Nats on Sunday!) Does Ben still have the pics from last year?
BTW... more of y'all should join me in the double! Sprint Nats on Sunday morning is going to be fun! (yes, the run will be painful, but recovery for the other two should go well and its only a 5K). Plus the field is smaller and most people in Sprint Nats will have raced Age-Group Nats on Saturday, so it's easier to place.
Definitely in for the Vermonster attempt.
Possibly in for the Double. I've never done a double, and since I'm racing (generally, and specifically this race!) for pure course enjoyment, it might be kind of fun to race both.
That being said, you can't get started on that ice cream until I cross the finish line, yo. ;)
In for a different kind of double, Magic Hat brewery & Vermonster ;)
It looks like we have about a dozen people registerred for Age-Group Nats on August 18. I want to figure out accomoations soon... make sure we get a place while we still can! If you're going, add your info to this google doc:
The Age-Group Olympic race on Sat Aug 18 is sold out, but the Sprint race on Sun Aug 19 is still open! And you don't need to qualify for the sprint!
Hey! Can you try setting the permissions on this google doc again? I still can't edit.
I just created a new google doc, because I was having trouble with the old one:
I added the 3 people that already requested to be added. To everyone else - send me a message with your email address, and I'll add you too!
How about transportation DC to VT? Flying? Driving?
USA Triathlon is working with the city of Burlington to expand the field size... making it possible, maybe even likely, that they will re-open registration for Age-Group Nats. So, if you're on the fence and did not register yet, add your name to the wait list ASAP!
Here's this message I received from the USAT:
"USA Triathlon is now making additional slots available after the event was announced on June 5 as being sold out in record time. (For example, USA Triathlon is working with the City of Burlington and local organizers to receive the necessary permits to expand the transition area.)
In order to fill these slots as they become available, USA Triathlon has set-up a wait list. Effective now, you can add yourself to this wait list. We encourage all qualified athletes to do so as quickly as possible, because we anticipate that slots will be allocated immediately upon their availability."
