I've had a dull pain under my 2nd metatarsal for years and it's finally gotten bad enough to do something about it. I had metatarsal pads put in my shoes yesterday and a podiatrist suggested custom orthotics with a metatarsal cutout as the next step. I've read mixed reviews on that type of treatment online.
Metatarsalgia seems pretty common - anyone have experience they can share? Thanks!
I have metatarsalgia and have tried the pads and orthotics. They help, but switching to minimalist shoes has helped the most. By decreasing the lift, less weight shifts to my metatarsals. I rarely have pain there anymore.
That's great to hear! I've been doing half of my runs in shoes with a low (4mm) heel-toe drop as a first step for a few months. I've been using Merrells (which I love), but also just got some of those ridiculous Hoka one one shoes. They've got a low heel-toe drop, but are definitely not minimal!
