I would also be interested in joining a group for this somewhere, since I normally swim at UMD and they are shut down from 12/24-1/3. Need to get in those NCC miles somewhere else I guess.
If someone knows of a pool, count me in. At the very least, I'll be looking to do some serious yardage on New Year's Eve eve (30th) at Wilson.

I'm proposing an unofficial Swim in the New Year for 12/31/14. Wilson Pool at 9:00am. It should be set up as long course so it will be legit 10km swim if you finish it.

I'm in, although I would prefer an 8am or a 3pm start so I can at least make a half day appearance at work either before or after the swim.
I'm up for an earlier start time too at Wilson...6 or 7 am for people who have to work!
Jason - I have a couple of other options for us. I've broken this into 2K workouts.
1) 1,000 warmup
1,000 pull....paddles optional
2) 500 swim; 500 swim w/ fins
500 pull/500 pull with paddles
3) 4 X 250
4) 10 x 100s (odds free/evens IM)
20 x 50s
500 kick cool down
Is there a consensus on a start time at Wilson on the 31st? Like Shannon, I'm hoping for something that accommodates a half day of work, so either 8am (maybe 730) or 3pm would work for me.
I'm contemplating a "12 days of Christmas" themed workout, two ideas I had were:
12x25, 11x50,10x75,9x100,8x125,7x150,6x175,5x200,4x225,3x250,2x275,1x300 = 9100
1200-1100-1000-900-800-700-600-500-400-300-200-100 = 7800 (LCM friendly)
Open to ideas of what to do in each of these sets.
I'm up for an early start. Should we go with 7:30 in the water? That should leave half a day for "work" as if anyone was really going to be productive on NYE :)
7:30am is perfect for me. FYI - Wilson will be LCM so the 12 days of Christmas set doesn't work.
My buddy Peter will also likely join for the first part, but he wants to do something like 100x50.
I begin every workout with a 1000 warmup: 400 swim, 300 pull, 200 kick, 100 swim just to loosen everything up.
Afterwards, I'm totally willing to do a bunch of 50s with Peter until he hits his limit, and then do bunch of long, easy swims after to reach the 10k mark.
I can't do the morning, but will swim in the afternoon if I get out of work early enough.
I am aspiring to get to Wilson close to 6AM in the hopes of putting in 5km before work. The consensus among fed emps is that since we got last Friday off we won't be getting out significantly early on Wens. - Mark
I'll try and be there by 6:30am to get started.
Remember to bring some calories. A big swim is just like any other endurance event. The pool staff will probably complain if it's on deck so just bring a bag or something to keep near.
