For those of us that don't have our own wetsuits I was wondering if folks were thinking the race will be wetsuit legal or not this weekend. Personally, I would prefr to use one if legal but would rather not spend the money on the rental the water temps are going to be too warm. That and it is just one less thing to get to the start line.
I wouldn't count on it being wetsuit legal, temps have been in the 80s.
water temp conditions can be found HERE
Maybe with the cooler temps coming this week, the water temp will drop. It just needs to get to 78.
Or we could just dump buckets of ice upstream from the swim shortly before they take the official water temp. :)
Swim naked. Like you (TDPrange) said, one less thing. And water in the 70's is not cold. ;)
I predict a wetsuit swim, the water temp has been plummeting!!! Ok just a few degrees but we have some mid-50 degree nights ahead.
Goodness, at that rate I might have to get out my dry-suit!
I hope it does continue to plummet!
It's still dropping! Water is currently sub 78F, so it's wetsuit legal! YAY!
OMG, sub 78 is so wonderfully warm!
Context is everything. ;)
78* is borderline roasting in a full wetsuit.
Is it legal to just swim with a pair of DeSoto Speedtubes? ie: just the bottoms of a 2 piece suit?
I think so. Note the word think. I have seen lots of things at Nations in my one year doing it. I saw a guy towing a noodle, "just in case". I've seen a forward facing snorkel. I bet your tubes are allowed. Absolute worst case you wouldn't be eligible for AG awards.
Current water temp, a bone chilling 76!
Just announced at The Nations Tri expo, water temp is 77 deg (wetsuit legal), as of now.
So does it get really hot to wear a full sleeve wetsuit in 75-77 degree water? I've only worn them in races with cold water (<65 degrees). Trying to weigh the benefits of buoyancy vs. overheating. Thanks.
Depending on how long it takes you to do the 1500m swim, I would probably say no, you won't overheat in that amount of time. But if it takes you more than hour, maybe you will.
Official word from the site 79.6 degrees, not wetsuit legal. :(
Mr. August - Can you provide a link? I don't see it on the website.
Just rejoined DC Tri. I opted for the wetsuit this year and it worked out fine. I went for speed and finished in 25:32, which was 1st place (out of 137) for the "men's wetsuit division." I just don't like swimming in open water without a wetsuit. Speed + Fear :)
