I have a little time off after this week and am thinking of heading out to Deep Creek next week for a night or two.
My plan is to camp out, ride LONG in the mornings and then work in either a swim or run later in the day. I'm flexible which days but can't do it over the weekend, oddly enough.
Where do you go swimming in DC? I am heading there over July 4th and would love to get some open water swim practice in there.
You gonna do the full Monogohela Massacre this time Travis? We are going up July 4th and doing the full Diabolical Double....it promises to be a great time...
You are going to have your own mini camp going on....say hi to Killer Miller for me, and on you way out of Westernport and Big Savage give those two climbs the middle finger for me... :)
You can just swim in the lake. It is best (and preferred by the locals and boaters) if you swim from the beach near the camp ground instead of from the boat launch area, which is where the swim course itself begins and ends. DCL is smooth and calm, not choppy at all. If you want to "train the way you are going to race" though, consider swimming with your eyes closed to replicate the pea fog on race day.
Also, just FYI for those who aren't familiar with the bike course, about the only water on the course is a pump on the left side of the road in New Germany State Park, ~ mile 35.
Thanks, Gary--is there a particularly good time to swim from the beach area, and where is the beach area? My in-laws usually rent a house on the lake and we don't stray too far from there. Thanks for your help.
On the SavageMan bike course, you can get water/food at Kenny's Market in Westernport at mile 18 (actually about 100 yards off course). Also at Howe's Market at the intersection of New Germany Rd and Otto Lane (mile 37), and around mile 46 at the post office / store at the intersection of Brenneman Rd and MD-495. This store is often closed, but about 1/4 mile prior is a church with doors always unlocked and a drinking fountain inside.
For swimming, the best place to swim is from a little beach area near the Discovery Center and down into the protected, wake-free cove. Map here:
I"ll be at Deep Creek Lake the week of 7-27-09.
I'd like to hook up with someone to do some open water swims of 1 to 1-1/5 miles.
I'll be swimming, cycling & running at DCL Memorial Day weekend (May 27 - 31, 2010)... fyi... if anyone is going to be up there... give me a holler. tomcollins at mac dot com
