Ironman Kona Bike Cutoff??
POSTED: 1/02/10 12:33 PM

After watching the Ironman Kona coverage, question:
Is there really a 5:30 bike cutoff at Kona?
Seems a little strange that you have to make a 5:30 bike time, but still have 17 hours to finish. That's a lot of time to fill up with the swim and run. Thanks.

i think either the coverage is wrong or you might have misheard the program.

i can see 530pm bike cutoff time, but not a 5:30 bike time cut off. afterall there is no way all those 16 hr finishers would be able to do a 5:30 bike split and still finish in 16-17 hours.. that would mean they would be literally crawling on the run, as in crawling the entire way.

i think you have to be off the bike by 5:30pm at the latest. but double check that.

I was wondering the same thing as I watched the race yesterday. I also concluded that they must have meant 5:30pm.

Yeah, it's gotta be 5:30 p.m. The pro women take 5 hours to do the bike, so a 5 1/2 hour limit would be ridiculous. The swim cut-off is what, 2:20? So they have to be out of the water by 9:20 a.m., which gives them about 8 hours to bike and then 6 1/2 to run.

Did everyone else have fun watching the back-to-back episodes yesterday? It was interesting to see patterns in the commentary (the "clever" Energy Lab comments that were virtually identical from year to year, for example) and how each year differed in the emphasis placed on the age groupers and human interest stories.

You are correct about the cut-off times.

Yes, it was great watching the Ironman marathon and more interesting than most of the college football games.

Yes, it's that way at all Ironmans.
-You have to be out of the swim to 9:20am, that gives you 2 hrs 20 min from the start of the race.
-Then you have to be off the bike by 5:30pm, giving you 10 hrs 30 min from the start of the race, and a total of 8 hrs 10 min to finish the bike section.
-Then of course you all know the midnight dead line, giving you 6 hours and 30 min to finish the marathon.

During the coverage of the 2001 Ironman, they mentioned that the race always takes place during a full moon. Is this correct? I never knew this.

ah thanks. I had no clue they were talking about the time of day and not the bike time - so used to thinking about IM bike's the other way - funny (strange). I loved the show but that kept me mentally freaked.
Cmon Kev! Understand that many in this club are not football fans, but if you are one, those NY Day bowl games were ridiculous. Penn State - LSU, FL State - WVU, Ohio State - Oregon - great lineups and close games. Northwestern-Auburn was one of the best football games ever played. Only Florida-Cinci was a blowout. Seriously though, why was Cinci playing Florida!? It's Bowl Season (only 4 games left) and NFL playoffs - enjoy it while it lasts :)

"The cutoff on the bike is 5:30, and right now it's 5:35. and you don't have to tell Rudy Garcia-Tolson that his day is done. This is as far as it goes...this time."

On second review it did appear to be time of day, and it looked 5:35 pm. Sad moment for Rudy.

Auburn-NW game was entertaining but overall boring games... just too many commercials and stoppage of play. And I was pissed that the U got bumped from the Gator Bowl because it was Bobby Bowden's last game!

The real game is Monday night with TCU vs: Boise State! That should be a barnburner. Go Broncos!!

Ah Miami the U - did you see the ESPN special on The U? It was good.
Tonight's game should be a blast. The winner will claim they are the real national champions.
