As a USAT regional council candidate, I received this notice today. Notice the election ballots will be emailed 1/21. Note USAT CEO Urbach has been replaced as election administrator. As we do not have a national board seat up for election this round, your ballot only will have regional council election nominees and the three by-law proposals. Please vote NO on all of the by-law proposals. See my previous emails for details on the reasons why. In short,
1. The regional restructuring is bad for us. The proposal appears to be in violation of USAT by-laws that require us to be given a choice of two plans for any restructuring. There is no rationale for what is being proposed.
2. We don't need to be USA Triathlon of Colorado. The sole purpose for this action is to weaken the Sunshine provisions and other protections all members enjoy by right under our California corporation. USAT is pushing this through to try to get out of complying with California laws that benefit members.
3. The proposal to reduce the elite athlete representation on the USAT board and committees, if passed, will be litigated. We don't need that. The Amateur Sports Act demands that the athletes approve any such changes before the membership can approve it. There's no good reason for the proposed change that anyone has put forward. It's a slap in the face to our athletes that only hurts our sport.
Note that under the schedule: the board and our regional council will be short members until April because those whose terms expired Dec 31st no longer are on the board or the councils and the new members won't be seated until April.
USAT Message on the Election:
Dear Election Candidate:
You are receiving this email because you are a candidate running in the 2013 USA Triathlon Election.
Due to procedural and technical issues associated with the voting process for the 2013 USA Triathlon Elections, the Board of Directors suspended elections on November 16. The USA Triathlon election process is complex with 15 different versions of the ballot directed to multiple Regions and three different membership groups. As a result of a database error, a small group of members received duplicate ballots. In addition, there were potential issues concerning candidate eligibility.
When informed of these issues, the Board thoroughly reviewed the election process, and determined that all votes from the suspended elections this past fall should be discarded without tabulation, and that a re-vote should be conducted.
Ballots will be made available to the eligible voters for a revote on 1/21/2014. The Election Administrator has approved the following election schedule:
· Ballots made available – 1/21
· Final day to for voting/ballots – 2/20
· Results announced – 3/7
· Deadline to protest – 3/22
· Deadline to hear and decide protest – 4/21
· Election results certified – 4/22
Please make your vote count and encourage your constituents to participate in the re-vote related to USA Triathlon’s governance.
For questions regarding the re-vote process, please contact:

Some USAT members have received their ballots already. PLEASE put yours to good use & vote NO NO NO three times, once on each of the three by-laws proposals.
If you have any questions, please send 'em my way! Each individual vote counts a LOT. One decision in the last election 2 years ago was decided by fewer than 20 votes. Please vote! Thank you.
Hey DC Tri~ Just a friendly reminder that those ballots you have not yet cast in the USAT Elections will turn to dust on 2/20 so PLEASE VOTE THEM today!
Please don't let that ballot go to waste. We need each and every one of you to VOTE NO on all THREE proposed by-laws changes. It will take less than a minute. We have the votes right here in this club to make a difference in this outcome of this election. We need you all to vote to keep North Carolina in the Mid-Atlantic Region, to keep the Sunshine laws in place that protect all our members, and to keep USAT as USAT and not USAT of Colorado. (No federation is USA "Sport" of Colorado -- or any other specific state. Please dig out that ballot you received January 23 or 24th or so and click on the link to vote. It's ridiculously easy and we need your vote. Let the club know you voted NO on all three to protect the rights we have as one of the strongest, most active clubs in the country!
As I may have said previously, during the last USAT national board election, a board member won his seat by 15 votes. What that means is that if just the folks who show up at one work out stop to vote before they begin, it's possible to sway the outcome of an election. The Mid-Atlantic is rock solid and we helped build USAT to what it is today. We developed the first rankings system. We had the "firsts" in more programs than you can imagine. Let's keep our great region in tact and growing with programs and benefits for all of our athletes.
As you can see from the ballot and USAT's publications, website, etc., no one took the time to even bother to say these changes are necessary and explain why. Well, they're not necessary and in the end will prove harmful in many ways too numerous to detail.
The bylaws protections of members rights were put there for good reason and those of us who live in the seat of federal government should be savvy enough to understand why. So please, let's protect them for ourselves and for the members who come behind us.
While you're hanging out watching the Olympics on tv, pull our your laptop or your Ipad or your phone, and VOTE NO on all 3 By-laws proposals.
