Regarding Bryan’s post addressing the value of membership to the Club’s “older” members, I would add two points from the perspective of someone who falls in the “older” category at age 50.

First – one of the aspects of triathlon that I’ve always enjoyed during my 9 years in the sport is the ability to train with athletes of all ages.  A group of 8 of us trained for Ironman Lake Placid together in 2013 and our ages ranged from the 20s to the 50s, and while there were certainly snickers when the 20-something asked us what a rotary phone was, the training bonds were strong and we remain friends and training partners to this day.

Second – as Director of Community Development and Outreach, I encourage you to contact me if you have ideas or want to brainstorm about fostering a stronger community among the older members of the club.  My goal is for everyone to find their place in the club.  My email is community@dctriclub.org.  Let’s be in touch!

Hi, Charles.  Are you on FB?  All of the workouts are posted there as well.  I haven’t seen a workout posted for tomorrow yet though.

This is great Bryan! Love the idea of addressing some of the member issues that came up in the survey.

Regarding the Forum, I’ll admit to being someone (even as a board member) who primarily uses FB as my way to connect with other members, but Forum discussions still have their place.  And the more folks who return to posting here, the more traffic we will have.  So let’s get back to the Forums, folks!

Veteran Athlete of the Year (Male): Jeff Halper.  Jeff began participating in triathlons in 2009, but this co-lead of the MoCo Mafia quickly moved from participant to perennial fixture on the Masters Clydesdale (MC) podium.  Never one to brag about his own accomplishments, in recent years, Jeff rarely participated in a race without bringing home a MC award.  This year was no exception; Jeff was 1st MC at Diamond in the Rough OLY; 2nd at Bethany Beach; and 1st at Pleasants Landing OLY.  Way to go, Jeff!

    Most improved (Female):  Carol Braun

Carol did her first tri in 2011, but really turned up the heat when she raced her first Ironman in Chattanooga in 2017.  She had a 12:25:28 finish, which placed her in the top 10% in her AG, and qualified her for Nationals. This year she focused on getting faster at the Olympic distance and her results were fantastic:  3rd AG at Rock Hall OLY; 1st AG at Diamond in the Rough OLY; 3rd AG at Colonial Beach OLY; and most impressively, at Nationals in Cleveland she qualified for Team USA at ITU Worlds!  And to top it off she qualified for the Boston Marathon at September’s International Peace Marathon.  2018 has been a great year for Carol.  Congrats!

Let’s get this party started.  I nominate Bryan Frank, Nick Pleisch, Liz Glomb, and Margaret Moral.  I’ll let each of them post and sing their own praises while I hum along.

Imagine you are 42 and taking your first swim lesson while your kids stand on deck yelling “Streamline, Mommy, STREEEEEAMLINE!”  Fast forward 7 years and you are crossing the finish line of your second Ironman of the year with your kids standing on the sideline yelling, “Go Mom, GOOOOOOOO!”  And with that you’d have my triathlon career in a nutshell.

My name is Joyce Jones.  I’m nominating myself for the 2018/2019 DC Tri Club Board of Directors.  And I’m asking for your consideration and your vote.

I joined DCTC in 2010, as many of us do, as an NTPer – curious, a bit intimidated, and cautiously excited.  With each passing year, triathlon, the Club, and its people became more important to my life.  In 2012, I banded together with an incredible group of D.C. Tri folks who live and train in Montgomery County and the (infamous) MoCo Mafia was formed.  In 2015, we were officially recognized as a Club Community Group and I’ve been a co-leader of the group ever since, moderating our MoCo Mafia and Friends FB page and organizing group rides and runs for an ever-growing group of MoCo-area triathletes.  As this 49 y.o., middle-of-the-pack, single mom can attest, there truly is a place for everyone in this Club and I want to continue and strengthen that core value.

I credit the Club with introducing me to life-long friends and instilling in me a passion for a sport that I never would have considered possible for a doggy paddler and person whose last bike had a banana seat and streamers.  In the Mafia, we like to stay that “Tri years are like dog years,” and if that’s the case, I’ve benefited from being a member of the D.C. Tri Club for 49 years; it’s time for me to give back.  I hope you’ll elect me to serve you on the Board of Directors and give me that chance.

Thank you and Let’s Go D.C. Tri!
