I generally do something pretty similar to Joseph– mostly focusing on swim/run/strength.
I’ll try to get in the long bike, even if its on a spin bike– that longer endurance stimulus (2.5h+) isn’t something I can get through swim/run without risk of injury. But if it’s just a week, I’ll just take the hit and pick up the following week.
For me,…[Read more]

Mark,
Strides are basically a 10s-30s segment where you start from a standing position, accelerate up to 5k pace or mile pace, and then bring it back down. The objective is to focus on form (proper foot strike, posture, very high cadence) while running near top end speed, thus improving running economy. These are usually done at the end of an…[Read more]

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Training Peaks Performance Metrics in the forum Olympic Distance Program (ODP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 7 months ago
Hi Laurie,
Just to provide a little more detail on what Coach AJ said (although the TP metrics are highly influenced by your LT and HR zones):
“Form” (aka Training Stress Balance) is the difference between your Acute Training Load (7 days) and your Chronic Training Load (42 days). Simply put, it measures whether you’ve been putting an increased…[Read more]

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Battling IT Band Issues in the forum Ironman Program (IMP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 7 months ago
Nick, make sure they do some kind of running gait analysis (once acute pain subsides) and give you cues to work on while you run. Its great to do a bunch of strength work for your medial glutes, but unless you change the mechanical patterns to engage them while you run, that work is useless. AJ mentioned this (point 2), but just wanted to really…[Read more]

Since we’re talking about tires, also want to mention that usually tires will have some kind of wear indicator on them to let you know if they’re too worn. Mine (Continental 4000 GPs) have two little indentations that indicate whether you need to replace (they disappear as the tire gets worn). I’ve been told by mechanics that this is a pretty…[Read more]

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Heart Rate Training (off season focus?) in the forum Half Ironman Program (HIP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 8 months ago
Going to echo AJ’s commentary on this. Especially as someone who historically runs too much in Z3/4 (and has an injury history to prove it), I’ve had to work a lot on running in the lower HR zones. I’ve always felt that Z1/2 feel kind of clunky and ungainly, so one of the mental tricks I’ve started using (stolen from Mario Mola) is to think of it…[Read more]

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Podiatrist recommendations please! in the forum General Discussions 4 years, 2 months ago
Agree with this, usually PT over podiatrist. A podiatrist’s job is to fix any fractures or put you in a boot/orthotics if you need them. A PT’s job is to support functional habilitation. So unless you think something might be broken, PT is the better method.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks to all who came out! Just as an update: we’re starting to send out the video analysis over the next few days (a few have already been sent). It’s a few days behind schedule, but you all should receive shortly. Just wanted to keep y’all in the loop.

Hi ODP team,
We’ve got 4 spots left as of this morning, so going to bump this one more time. In terms of the benefits of the swim video analysis, outlining a few here:
- Just because you’re swimming doesn’t mean you’ll get faster. With water being 8x denser than air, swimming well is of critical importance (for speed and injury prevention).…

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Warm up in the forum Ironman Program (IMP) for Paid Participants 4 years, 4 months ago
I usually go for some combo of the following:
1. Before I put on my wetsuit, a casual 5 min jog with some pickups towards the end. Nothing too strenuous tho.
2. Break out the pull chords and do 3 rounds of 20 pulls and 15 squats. Pulling hard-ish, but not blowing up or anything.
3. If they let me get in the water, I do 7-9 minutes of swimming.…[Read more] -
Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Tips for Riding in Wind in the forum Half Ironman Program (HIP) for Paid Participants 4 years, 4 months ago
Dear experts of wind-riding,
My understanding is that deep section wheels are significantly harder to steer (on the front anyway) than box wheels. For a windy race like eagleman, would you recommend leaving the front as a box rim?
Thanks,

Woof, sorry! Hope you’re doing better. Would definitely second AJ’s recommendations about listening to A) your doctor B) your PT C) your body. Remember, its better to get to the start line undertrained than injured. You can have many races, but you only get one body…

Jason Sreedhar replied to the topic Eagleman Lodging in the forum Half Ironman Program (HIP) for Paid Participants 4 years, 5 months ago
Just to throw in my opinion 🙂
You might want to actually think about how important it is that you stay close to the race site. Personally, since I know I’ll be up a few hours beforehand for breakfast and I can use the drive to get into my headspace, I’m not opposed to saving some money and staying a little farther (or at home). That being said,…[Read more]
