    Just to add on–

The organizers were warm, courteous and helpful. It’s great value for the money, I thought. I also appreciated that the routes were well shaded and the roads in good condition.

    1. the swim was my first time attempting an open water triathlon and until training for this event i don’t think i had ever swam more than 2 laps straight. I think the practice the day before and the OWS clinic the week before really helped. In the end I was able to complete because I focused on not paying attention to others’ speeds. I kept a very relaxed pace which led to me being one of the last out. I think i could go faster next time, but it helped me stay calm and finish. My sighting is pretty bad though. I felt like a newborn turtle going towards the streetlight instead of the ocean…
    2. How much more difficult is the Jamestown swim than Lake Anna? Are there certain things we should be preparing for that we didn’t experience?
    3. I experienced a weird sensation where one of my hands lost nearly all of its gripping power during the cycling. I cycle regularly and this has never happened.  I was literally struggling to squeeze goo out. My feet also went numb and I didn’t regain full sensation until a mile into the run. Not sure why, as I’ve put thousands of miles on my bike and this hasn’t happened.

FYI–We missed the deadline for DCtri kit ordering, so we bought pearl izumi off Amazon and I’m happy with mine.

    Hi,

I have a few questions on what kind of retrofits and upgrades i should consider making to my commuter, a Surly Crosscheck (2013).

I checked the specs to get an idea of my groupset and ranges from Sora (front derailleur) to Deore (rear derailleur) to Tiagra (rear cogs). The cassette has been replaced once (though I did not check on whether they replaced at the same grade), other parts are the same. Would it make sense to upgrade any individual parts of the groupset? It would seem to me that rear derailleur, cassette and chain might make the most difference, but I don’t really know.

Would I benefit from buying higher quality wheels? Would lighter wheels help my time?

As far as tires, I ride on 28mm gatorskins. One of the NTP leaders suggested going down to 24mm and suggested a specific tire but i didn’t get the name. I wouldn’t be making this switch until the race, as I commute 70 miles a week on this bike and need tough tires. Any suggestions here?

As far as race prep, I would assume I should strip off the rack and probably the fenders too–is that right?

Any experience doing a tri on a Brooks saddle? It’s been comfy for me, but the water post-swim probably wouldn’t be great.

    Thanks.

I haven’t been able to try them on so I’m not sure if I’m a small or medium. I’m 5’9/10, 150lb. do you think a medium would fit? Thanks for the offer!

Is anyone else in Montgomery County? We live in downtown Silver Spring and will likely be doing a lot of our cycling and running training in Rock Creek Park. We’ve been going to the County Rec Swim in Bethesda.
