Sorry, in step 2, that should have been in “Export Data,” go to “Workout Summary”

FYI, I just discovered another way export the training program for use on a rescheduled event. I’m doing this on a Mac:

    1. From the Training Peaks app home page, go to your account (left-hand side of the screen, where your name is).
    2. In “Workout Summary,” click on “Export data”
    3. Choose the dates and download.  It will be in CSV format.
    4. Open it in Excel or similar.

I haven’t figured out a bulk way to upload again to the new dates, but at least all the workouts are in one place and you can cut and paste them day-by-day, which seems a little easier than copying them from the calendar and toggling back and forth between the original date and new date in the Training Peaks calendar.  Does anyone know how to do a bulk upload? Maybe use the “Workout Files” function?

    I will keep tinkering.

As to whether I did a virtual race, unfortunately no, because a couple of weeks after I made the half-marathon length in the training program, I reawakened an old injury doing speed work. Thus my plan to focus on running form, and I appreciate the tip about NOT enrolling in a half-marathon training program while I do that — at least not yet. I have mastered cadence but am still working on core / glute engagement, strength, and not heel-striking. So I will keep plugging away at that.

Yes, I was gung-ho for the extended training peaks subscription.

But Covid 19 has been an evolving reality, and I decided to defer until 2020, given the vagaries of racing at a very crowded course in September, and the uncertainties of traveling to an out-of-state venue. And I am 66 years old – high risk group.

So where does that leave me with training? First thing I decided to do was to go back to doing rides and runs that I really like doing, such as 50+ mile rides out toward the Tobytown  area of MD from  Arlington — with hopes to enjoy somE group rides with friends when deemed safe.

And focussing on running form, which seems to be my Achilles heel, if not quite literally. My plan is to program a half-marathon in to training peaks, while doing all the core and form work requiredA to meet that distance injury-free, to get that distance under my belt, without injury, so I feel confident about it in a HIM. Haven’t started it yet – will do so soon.

Meanwhile, I am training without a plan, but using the many, many tools I have acquired during these six months. My broad sketch of a plan is doing hills, intervals, distance for both run and bike 3 or 4X a week, with as much strength training As I can muster using body weight/tubing/dry land drills thrown in, plus a rest day. And to enjoy what I do: today, I explored a new hilly area of North Arlington, choosing  to check out a street if it was steep.  Earlier this week, I rode 30 miles on my cross bike on the C&O. Haines Point loops are always A good workout.

    That’s where I’m at.

Great! Since many in this program are affected by the postponement of Eagleman, what is the status of the club’s discussions with Training Peaks to extend our six-month subscriptions?

I bought a Garmin Fenix 5 in November of 2018, and it’s just about perfect, in my mind. Every flaw in my old old Garmin (a 910 XT, if I recall) was addressed in this watch. Plus, you can use it as a wear-all-the-time watch, and get previews of text messages that come to your phone, etc.  I also have had Apple watches, and while they are more robust for the daily phone/watch interaction, I can’t imagine using one for  triathlon.

The Fenix is expensive, but I paid $350 for mine on sale at REI, down from $500.  The trick is to wait for the next version to come out, and then the older generation is marked down. Did the same thing with the 910. Garmin seems to constantly come up with upgrades, so sales are pretty much inevitable.

While I am continuing to train for Eagleman as if it will happen, I will not be surprised if it’s postponed. I would like the club to negotiate with Training Peaks for extension of the six-month enrollment period for paid participants whose races were postponed due to covid 19. It seems reasonable for Training Peaks to offer that courtesy to the club, which must bring them a lot of paid subscribers every year.

Closure of both pool and gym has been a double-whammy. I do have a tubing set, and have incorporated tubing into my body-weight workout, including swim-specific drills called a tubing row for shoulders and back,  tubing stroke for biceps, and diagonal wood chop for core. That’s in addition to planks, squats, pushups, and lunges. For me, the gym provided focus and the pool is much more interesting than any tubing drill, so discipline has been a problem. What seems to help is loud music and limiting the size and duration of the exercise set since the anticipation of going through a long list of drills prevents me from even starting…

I plan to actually practice yoga, especially since the once-a-week class I go to is cancelled. And also do more body weight/elastic band strength training. And will check out some dry-land swim drills.

However, today, I started doing yard work and never made it down to the exercise mat. Takes an extra measure of discipline to get there..

Thanks for wrestling with this — seems like the right decision, however unfortunate it is.

One thing I had been looking forward to was the running clinic to get feedback on my higher cadence-altered form. The good news is I have been running injury-free, even as my mileage has increased.  But the high cadence still feels (and likely looks) awkward during warm-up, while overall, my pace seems to be slower. If that’s the price to pay for avoiding injury, it’s worth it, but maybe there’s a next step I need to get to in the process of  learning higher cadence running? If others are still working through this, might be a worthwhile topic for the forum.

My plan is to do the long run Sunday starting on the W&OD trail in south Arlington Sunday; open to having others join.  I can’t predict right now  what time I’ll be able to get on the bike on Saturday, but can’t do an early ride.

Note: I will be at the clinic at Catholic U on Sunday and can bring the bag if you’re interested.
