Joe Shields

February, 2020

Joe started his triathlon career in 2016 when a work colleague got USAT Coach certified and asked Joe if he’d be his first athlete. After a couple years of knee issues with running, this seemed like just the right opportunity. After doing his first 70.3 in 2018, Joe joined the DCTri’s off-season spin and Half Ironman Program to up his game for 2019 and ended up qualifying for 70.3 Worlds. 2020 is the first year Joe is part of the Elite Team Program and he’s looking forward to the finish line of his first IM.

Age Group/Location: 35-39; Belgium (army-brat)
Years Racing: 5
Athletic Background: Football in high school, all the intramurals in college, running since 2009, lap swimming since 2017 (using a very lax definition of swimming any of the masters coaches…)
Strengths on the course: Generally being loud. Whether that’s whining because it hurts or yelling because I see another DCTri friend (or anyone who is pushing themselves!)
Goals for 2022: Show that despite a huge lump on my shoulder from my bike accident I won’t be the last one out of the water. After 2 years of planning to complete an IM and not even getting to the finish line, this year I’d just like to get to the start line. I think that feels more realistic.
Favorite Places To Train: Sadly my amount of outdoor biking will take a while to recover, so it better be zwifting in the basement or I’m going to be in trouble.
Favorite thing when not swimming, biking, or running: Oh it’s definitely eating food and enjoying a healthy amount of adult beverages. Ideally this would take place in the sun and by the water. Preferably with my wife, kid, and dog (we’re in the early years of marriage/triathlon, so still puts up with me)
Favorite food: Sour Patch Kids. They rock.
Fun Fact: Day job includes raising and selling chickens.  No I am not kidding.
Fav Race distance: Olympic. Long enough that you should probably train for it, short enough you’re ready for beer right after.
Fav Race: Luray. It’s beautiful. Feels like there’s a bunch of support.
Other stuff you want to talk about? Yeah. As I updated this it made me very sad that two years ago I said my dog was faster than me. Now she’s slower than me. No bueno. I want to clone her.
