Sophia KaounasJanuary, 2019
Sophia first tried her hand at Triathlon in 2016 by committing to SavageMan’s Sprint in Deep Creek Lake, MD. After managing to qualify for USAT’s Age Group Nationals with her first go-around in the sport, she was hooked. In 2017 Sophia competed in just two races due to injury, but made 2018 her year by competing in 6 (4 Olys and 2 HIMs) triathlons and a variety of running races, including the prolific Marine Corps Marathon. Having never been a part of a team per say, Sophia couldn’t be more excited to race with the DCTC Elite Team and proudly represent DC Triathlon Club for the 2019 race season. She looks forward to being challenged by and training with her teammates, promoting the overall good of Triathlon and DCTC, and smashing some personal bests this season. Let’s go!
Date of Birth/Location: January 9; Brookings, South Dakota
Years Racing: 2.5
Athletic Background: I was a dancer for 15 years and I practice yoga often!
Strengths on the course: Cycling, dialed in race day nutrition (ALSO POST RACE FOODS), and espousing words of encouragement to teammates and friends.
Family Status: I cohabitate with the cutest Holland Loop rabbit in the world. His name is Bun B. and often goes by Bunny.
Goals for 2021: I would like to train as safely and efficiently as possible for IM Lake Placid, in July. I would also like to do my part and maintain health for myself and those around me by wearing a mask despite vaccination status.
Favorite Place To Train: Lately, I’ve been enjoying training running at Anacostia Park/Anacostia River walk Trail. I love riding out in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Locally, Custis Trail and the OG Hains Point/National Mall routes are still some of the best. Oh! And C&O for gravel!!
Favorite Race Distance: 70.3
Favorite Race: SavageMan!
Favorite thing when not swimming, biking or running: I love Mother Earth. I love practicing yoga outside, hangin’ in my hammock, and tossing a frisbee or football, camping, and hiking. I also love cooking for friends and family. Come to my table! I’d be happy to have you.
Fun Fact: I ride with the Taco Squad! I am lucky enough to be a team member of the District Taco Racing Team.
