Thanks for this, Jason. Very helpful. I also heed Margaret and Coach AJ’s advice to avoid OT.
April 1, 2019 at 3:29 pm #25726Amanda ClintonParticipantGreetings –
I have to travel to Iraq over the next two weeks. I inquired about options for swimming, running and cycling and they seem quite limited, particularly as a woman. Are there any thoughts about how to address situations like this? Kinds of workouts to do inside (in housing space) or maintenance of some sort?
Thank you
Amanda

Thank you. Of course I tried to sign up as soon as I could. I appreciate the hard work that it takes to organize these activities.

I just tired to sign up for the Master Swim Program Swim Video Analysis and all three sections are full. Would you happen to know if any additional courses/time slots/dates might be added?
Thanks much

Ha! Thanks for your post about the swim video analysis and mention of “splashing ineffectually at the back”! I am a slow swimmer at best – a terrible one at worst. That adds up to being very scared of the IM swim. I feel like if I get through that, I will have won my race no matter what happens on the bike/run.
For those of us not used to OWS, this article was helpful to me, especially in terms of working on orienting: https://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/6-tips-to-help-transition-from-the-pool-to-open-water. Of course, Coach AJ may have better information available and I defer to her.
I would love any suggestions you all have about the swim –
Anyway – I am supposed to work on Sunday, March 31st but requested permission to leave early so I can sign up. I hope to see you then.
Thanks, Amanda

I similarly offer apologies for missing the March 10th clinic. I know I would have benefited from being there and very much wanted to attend. My work travel schedule is planned months in advance and I had to be on the road the weekend that 2nd clinic was offered.
In terms of nutrition, my experience on endurance training and races (although in the IM category it’s 1/2IM not a full IM) is similar to what Coach AJ mentioned: When I manage sodium well, I achieve better results. Too much sugar leaves me depleted and nauseous.
At the advice of Coach AJ, I shifted away from Noom and am trying Scratch. I still find it a bit too sweet and need to dilute it a lot. I wonder at what point it is too diluted to be effective?
Thanks – Amanda

Thanks for the reply. I did see your earlier message but was curious about OT in particular. My plan is to look at the resources you mentioned, of course. I’ll focus on strength training for gluts and core, as well as “activation” of the same.

March 22, 2019 at 10:17 am #25510Amanda ClintonParticipantHi!
Thanks for this question, Hope. I have a hard time figuring out strength training, as well. I was thinking of trying Orange Theory which is, I know, more of a HIIT workout than strength per se. However, it holds my attention and keeps me honest since I have to go to classes. Is this a possibility? Has anyone hired a trainer for strength training? Is that even necessary?
Have a great weekend – Amanda

I am arriving a bit late on this thread, but if any of you go on a long ride in the next few weeks, I’d love to join. I’m new to both DC and triathlons (guess that’s obvious, given our group!) and cycling.
Thanks!
